Naive question for those more experienced than I....

Ok, so how do you guys tackle the task of taking a squared tang and turning it into a graceful rounded one like I see on French guns?

I inlet it with @ 1/8" showing above the line of the wrist,absolutly flat on the bottom of the tang,a sacrificial screw to hold it down,then file away. The higher the tang,the rounder it could be. Kinda easy when ya do it. I'm gonna brag a little,Kit Ravensher showed me how to bo that.

10-4. And what about the outside shape looking down? File it before hand?

i leave it high like pathfinder stated .  but i dont bring it down tell  i start shaping  the mortices .  once they are done , the finish shaping is done with a flile . thus rounding the wood and tang as one
