I cut my sear bar a bit too short and need to extend it. I ground about 3/8" of the end of the bar to about half its thickness and did the same to the bottom of an old drill bit that is about the same diameter as the sear bar. My question is on how to join them. Since the trigger bar will be pushing on the drill bit extension and causing some torque on the joint, I don't want the joint to fail. I have some low temperature silver solder I got from Micromark that I have used to solder on barrel underlugs and flux coated brass brazing rods. I have both regular propane and MAPP gas torches as well as a jeweler's oxy-acetylene torch so the heat source will be no problem. Could I use the low temperature silver solder or do I need to brass braze them together?

I would braze them, don't think that the solder will survive the torque over time, JMHO

Unfortunately a new sear is not available as the lock is no longer made. It's one of Curly Gostomski's trade gun locks.

I would take roundstock,drill,out the end so it slips over the short nub and then braze or ss.

The trouble with brazing as a repair is, you'll probably have to re-harden your sear after applying that much heat and I'm not sure how that might affect your repair.
Track of the Wolf offers a replacement lock and parts for Gustomski's trade gun lock but it IS a bit larger,.... if you have a TOTW catalog you might be able to compare your sear with the life-size picture in the catalog to see if the R.E. Davis sear is the same size. :bl th up

That might be the way to go, with the low temp silver solder that is available these days. :hairy

I would have somoen who is good with a TIG do it. Heat can be controlled, and temper maintained.

Me too. We don't know what brand of lock he is using, but a replacement sear should not cost much.
Hint: Measure twice, cut once.
