Title: Practice Pistol Case

Here is my first try at a pistol case for a pair of pistols ( British New Land Pattern Private Purchase Pistols ).  I built this case first of all to make sure I could build one that worked and second to figure out the fitting and assembly process for it.  It is made of Poplar stained Walnut.  There are still a few items missing from inside the case that I'm not finished with including a short starter/loading mallet and a cleaning rod that is on back order.  I've also decided to change the two latches on the front to bright brass instead of antique to match the carry handles and I'm adding a bright brass diamond escutcheon over the keyhole.

I finally got around to changing the hardware and hinges.  The new hinges are like the old ones just a bit heavier.  As for the hardware, you be the judge.

I'll tell you what.  Since this is just your practice piece, you can send it to me so you have an incentive to build the real one.  Be sure to leave the pistols and accouterments in it so I can display them! :laffing  :hairy

Very nice Mike!  

You said earlier that the case was made of "Poplar stained Walnut".
Perhaps it's the picture itself, the stain, the lighting, my computer, whatever, but to these old eyes it appears to made of Black Walnut, and I really like that!

I have made several attempts at making a few cases, and I have always had to "scorch" the Devil out of the wood, with a hand torch, to get a somewhat similar effect.

In fact, burnt Walnut, sanded down, makes for some pretty fair knife scales IMO.

Hey uncle Russ you're still on the green side of the grass.  Glad to hear it.  Life kinda got away from me for a bit and at the moment I've got one foot on an airplane if my client and the agency ever decide to pull the trigger.  

As for the stain the can says Dark Walnut, they don't do Black Walnut so your probably right on the color.  The flash and my camera has butchered the color in person it is a lot more uniform and not as grainy.

Michael,
There lies the problem with your photos, the flash.
Direct flash really screws the photos up.  Natural light is best.  We always take our photos outside on a sunny day under shade (no shadows to deal with that way.)
If you are going to take indoor photos with a flash, try to isolate the flash with a white sheet softening the flash.
So says me, who is able to screw up just about any photo, regardless of what technique I use.  It's a natural gift I have.
However, I really like the looks of that pistol box, I know they are a lot of trouble to make and to get right.  Glad to see you back.
