Yes it does. I use the "Choose File" button under "Attachment and other options" to find the file. The file name appears in the box. Then I click the "Insert Attachment 1" and the "attach=1" appears inside square brackets. But when I preview or post nothing appears, not even the [ Invalid Attachment ] that I see when you quote my message in your reply.
Like here, the image should appear between two smiley faces

 :)  [ Invalid Attachment ]   :)

Worse is that I've successfully done this several times before.
The trouble with doing things right the first time is no one realizes how hard it was.
Often, however, the following is more applicable.
I stand corrected, a position somewhat painful to achieve, but once there, is quite satisfying.

Let me try the PDF file again and then a JEPG file.  I tried both originally, neither worked.

PDF

JPEG
 [ Invalid Attachment ]

Fingers crossed ....  They both appear attached now, only the JPEG displays inline.

I notice too that I can now do attachments when I modify a post. That didn't appear earlier.

The problem, apparently, was only with PDF files.  Rob did something so they at least show up as a link, but still not inline.
JPEG files work fine.  I had tried the PDF file because it was much smaller (70k vs. 250k), and the website software acts like PDF files should work. But, after 40 years as a software engineer I should know better that to expect software to actually work  :Doh!   What was I thinkin'!

Rob, is there a try-it-out forum to test things like this and everyone doesn't get notified?

inline pdf links now show up ... there is NO way to show pdf content, only images and videos are direct content.

 [ Invalid Attachment ]

... no test forum - if something fails, i'd like to know about it here in the live forum.

a lot SMF "features" are mod add-on hacks, and inline images was one of them.

The link shows, but the image does not appear as it does for JPEG files.

see my post above your last post  ^^^^

ALSO - images embedded inside any other medium, like a pdf file, can never show.  better to just use the image rather than pdf it.

these are the allowed attached file types ...

Allowed file types: doc, gif, jpg, pdf, png, txt, zip

gif, jpg, png - these are direct content and will be viewed.  this is also true of external videos that are archived elsewhere on the web.

doc, pdf, txt, zip - these are not direct content and can only appear as links
