13/16" .50?
« on: February 11, 2017, 10:03:46 PM »
Is 13/16" across the flats too little for a .50 rifled?  If not, is there a maker out there that does such a barrel?

I agree with Rondo on this - to thin...  7/8" across the flats would be minimum IMHO, and even at that dovetails should be shallow.  Now a 13/16" .45 would be fine and again shallow dovetails.  :lt th

I have an early TC Cherokee .45 with a 3/4" barrel. Your 13/16" in 50 cal would be fine, considering, of course, appropriate powder charges. 80gr-3fg is max in my .45! Problem: what happens down the road when your guns future owner overloads this rifle, he bought, at your estate sale? Just say'in. I've taken a 50cal. cva barrel, bored it out to 54/28ga smoothbore, then octagon to round, and produced a fine shooter. APPROPRIATE POWDER CHARGES, required!!! Not lawyer proof!!

The smallest .50 barrel I've owned was 7/8".  Not sure at all about a 13/16 as that's the smallest of my .45s.  But if they make them they must trust them.

A little strong don't you think? It was a simple question.

Looks like that post was taken care of, Hank. I too saw it and thought it a bit strong as well.  :shake

i'd say that'd be borderline at best ... and perhaps a gamble of sorts, with life.  :o

I have an early TC Cherokee .45 with a 3/4" barrel.

Your 13/16" in 50 cal would be fine, considering, of course, appropriate powder charges.

You might want to re-measure your Cherokee's barrel, as I've had multiple Cherokee & Seneca  T/C's and every one of them had a 13/16" barrel, measured across-the-flats.

An octagon barrel, measured point-to-point, will result in a false/larger measurement of barrel thickness, as it does not address a barrel's thinnest/weakest width.

IME, a 13/16" thick .50 bore is a bit thin for MY safety - YMMV.
