Title: Percussion Caps, $4.99/50
Post by: PetahW on March 26, 2023, 07:48:35 PM
.

While surfing, I ran across a  possible way to make percussion caps on the cheap.

Buy standard Aquila .22 Long Rifle @ $4.99/50.

Lead pulled & added to the lead scrap pile

Powder dumped out & disposed.

Cut the forward 1/3 of the empty brass off with a Dremel cutter.

Nip around the new case mouth with wire cutters while rotating the case.

Use needle nose pliers to form the "cap" wings.

( Tested w/powder under the nipple - Powder ignited.)

Well that's interesting.

I'll probably just shoot more flintlock and save my caps for my specialty ML's (X-Stick Rifles, Chunk Gun, Pistols and Revolvers) all of which I don't shoot very often anyway...

I'll just keep honing my flintlock skills (which seem to be more fun to shoot anyway). This ought to "P O" the anti gun folk - but I could care even less about those idiots.  :stooges:

Kinda looks like it might be a big time-commitment per cap.

I hate to say it,,, but when prices for ammunition and accessories go up, it seldom (if ever) comes back down to what we were paying prior to the price hike gouging - so we're screwed no matter what with the higher prices. This has always been the nature of the beast, and I do not see this ever changing.

I don't think it would matter, if there were NO caps available, wherever - think: the anti's might pass legislation banning/regulating caps.

That's a marketing/retail trick. Fake a shortage, raise prices ridiculously high then let them drop back to about 50%higher than originally. People will see the drop and pay the new price gladly. Remember the coffee "shortage" in the eighties? Don't forget gasoline! This war, that refinery, that pipeline, China's stockpiling, etc. Recently, it was toilet paper and now eggs.

I think they will go for the 22 shells before they go after the caps.  JMHO.

That's true dmarsh. They went that route some years back under another "gun-grabber" that tried to crush our 2A...
