That is true tinder fungus. Once dry it should catch a spark just like char. Use small pieces, because it is hard to put out once it catches!

It's been said before: there's a cottage industry waiting for someone to gather and market the stuff, kind of like Rick Pierce's flints. Seems like a great enterprise for a kid! More fun (and quieter) than mowing lawns! I'm ready to be the first customer. Someone's gotta have a kid or grandkid with some spunk. It's the American way! Could send some kid to college!!! COME ON!!!!!

Or there could be a geezer looking to pay the medical insurance? Man, I'D do it if I lived where the stuff grows.

I have a very neat fire-making kit made for me by a guy named Zippo.  Despite much instruction and many nicked digits I can't get a fire with ordinary flint and steel and tinder combos.  graybeard

Well Kermit,I'm doing just that. I've been kinda "obsesed" latley and everytime I go to the wood's now,along with lookin for squirrel's and pat's,I'm lookin' for true tinder fungus. I have @ 25 lb's so far. Found some on a Paper Birch that was @ 15" long and 4" wide and 6" deep! Kinda like hunting for Morel mushroom's! Haven't seen what the market price is yet. Haven't seen it on the crawlers from the stock exchange.....YET!
