Was there a most common caliber?

Mine is a 50. With a good sized rock it would lift a Chevrolet. Made for planning your shot not chasing around.

That is great info on the heavier So. Mtn. Rifles.  I suspect that with a larger barrel they look , feel and gennerally resemble a Plains Rifle.  

A nice, light, large caliber rifle and a big powder charge is a good recipie for heavy recoil.
