Clarification needed here???????
« on: August 09, 2010, 03:08:58 PM »
Gent's, can anyone tell me what is the correct RB dia for a 12 ga.? I have a .735 mold for sale, and a 12. ga new englander for sale. I have cast a few RB's out of this mold, but they DO NOT fit down the barrel, even without a patch.

Now, is a .735 RB the correct size for a 12. ga???????

Or, does the shotgun I'm selling have a choked bore? If so, did they mark these as choked???????

Please help me out here boy's. I've got someone interested in the mold, saying he wants to use it for his 12 ga. And if I'm selling this New Englander to someone, I want to make sure I know if this thing is choked or not!

Thanks for your help!

Nominal bore diameter for a 12 ga is .729".  I would guess correct ball size would be around .719"???

I have used a .690 ball in a 12 gauge (.72 caliber) shotgun.

My .735 balls are used in my 11 guage (75 cal.) muskets.

.715 is what I use in my 12 bore guns. .735 would be for 11 or 10 bore's. .735 would work bare ball in a Pedersolli bess,it did in mine.

.690 is what Traditionsa and CVA  used to suggest for their 12ga.cyl. bores. Being smoothies I'm certain you could take it up to .710   Sam Fadala also reccomended a,690 for 12 ga. cyl. bore, in His BP loading manuals .

swamp , the only true way to find out what you have is to Mic the bore .
just becouse a  muzzleloading gun is marke 12 gage , does not mean thats what it is .
TC allows i believ .010 veriance in their bores .
if you look at the bore stamps on originals  you will see that in some cases that veriance can be as high a .050 .
ie its not uncommon to see a 12 gage barrel set stamped at 12.3  or 12.5
both are still considered 12 gages  but thier are actualy under bores .

The true measurment for a 12 gauge  is 729 this can enlarge to 740 which is classed as a 12 over 1.
13 gauge    710,                  13over1        719
 14 gauge    693 ,                14 over1       701
 15 gauge    677 ,                15 over 1     685
 16 gauge    662 ,                16 over 1     669
  20 gauge   615,
