Title: Turkey Wing Bone Call
Post by: rickevans on March 02, 2010, 11:59:46 AM
I have a nice turkey wing bone call that I woukld like to stain/dye a darker color. It is narural bone color now. I was about ready to use the "Old Bones" stuff on it, but that stuff is toxic! Any ideas that will darken the bones a bit and not cause me to get sick and die after a morning of sweet talking those gobblers?

The first wing bone call I made came from a tom whose wing hung on my shop wall for two years . It was a hell ofa fight gittin them feathers off, but I didn't need to stain the bones after I got it out! I have used ordinary wood stain followed by a clear coat of poly to stain them, no one has died..............yet.  Boy I'm gettin the turkey fever now!  See dozens of birds from my plow truck, my county is loaded with turkeys. Good luck boys.

I don't know how he dunnit, but the call that greyhunter gimme looks sort of natural darkened and has some artwork on it as well.

My son is gettin' the hang of suckin' on it and we are ready for Turkey season.

I saw a turkey hunt on the Outdoor Channel the other day and them rednecks was cammo from head to toe including their guns.  Even their turkey call as cammo.

Kind of funny all gussied up like that - obviously the 'modern' turkey hunter.

I spose y'all that hunt with ML jest blend in with what you normally wear - right?

Does the wingbone call stick out like a sore thumb if left 'in the white'?

I been hunting Eastern birds for alot of years and they have the best eyesight of anything I have ever hunted. Dang things have a brain the size of a pencil eraser but outsmart ya if ain't careful. I wear camo when hunting modern and my forest browns and greens when hunting ML as long as you blend in to the surroundings and don't move around. I actually had a ML buddy hunting with me down in Missouri one year and had him setup across a field from me in a brush pile and all I could see all day was his new elkhide mocs, stuck out like a sore thumb hehe. Next day he switched into old mocs and covered up some and I brought a nice bird right up in his lap.

Where I hunt, we take advantage of blowdowns and brush piles to hide in. I will not wear my blue or red shirts, just muted woods colors. I have a checked shirt light and dark green checks about 1/8 inch square. It works the best at blending in. Funny about the mocs "glowing" in the sunshine!
