Title: TC Hawken .50 Flinter

Picked this up in very good to excellent condition.  As always, I take any new or used gun apart, particularly plugs and liners.  Took some steam into the touch hole and a 3ft steel pipe for leverage on the Reed Corp wrench, but the breech plug came off nicely.  The plug was caked with bp residue as expected so I soaked it and the touch hole liner in brake cleaner and got 'em back to clean metal.  There is some corrosion in the chamber area just forward of the breech plug and a bit of 0000 steel wool laid over a patch on a jag smoothed that all out.  Plug and touch hole liner both went back in with Nikal anti-seize.  A bit more cleaning with moose milk, some drying patches and then a sloppy wet oily patch and it's ready to load.  Oh yes, made a wooden ramrod to replace the original nylon one.  Fitted a black English flint in a leather wrapper and she showers sparks.  8lbs 3ozs unloaded.  Nice.

Back in its day it was the grade "A" Number One factory made ML to have... I have a .54 TC Hawken Caplock that I just don't shoot enough, but it's a prime deer and antelope game taker with a patched ball, and a great rifle to carry in the field.  :shake

Rob knows this... I never owned a "cap gun" but the kind that took roll caps... :):)

I did own 2 base line T/c flinters for PA's late season some years apart...in 50 cal...

All we ever did was to put a Lyman Frizzen on the T/C as theirs seemed back then to be a bit softer and didn't spark as well...

I liked their flatter but plate and now have the GPR...

BACK then I ran 100 Gr of 3F Goex in the tube and a 4X pan charger around my neck...

I'd noticed ONCE that with the recommended charge (??? ) of ?? grains it printed at 65 yards 8-10 INCHES lower then the 100 gr. load so I shot the 100 gr load...

1:48 twist worked just fine with PRB that we had to use in PA, till the last years there when we still needed to use a flintlock but any projectile worked so I went to CVA Powerbelts with good success

You done good, that's some lovely wood!  Looks like the old style lock, judging by the cock.  I'm looking forward to a shooting report on this fine piece!
