Well they say idle hands do the devils work, so I'm starting another project. This is going to be somewhat a great lakes short bbl. fusil, (canoe gun) French styling, flintlock, home made brass trim. & a .58 cal. 24 ga. X 26" bbl. Walnut stock blank from Oregon...........Tom
-
2 more pic's
-
What's the overall length?
-
Can't wait to see it!
-
Near as I can tell at this point is 41", with a 13-1/2" LOP. Guy asked me today if one could be made "bigger" I replied how big ? I've made them up to 10 bore (mine) 34" bbl. 7 lb. he said I'll think about it.......Tom
-
That should be a nice looker....
-
Got the bbl. late yesterday. here's 2 more pic's........Tom
-
chan'l-1.jpg[/attachment:20z4yroq]Got a little more done this morning........Tom
-
3 more pic's, still waiting on lock.
-
First 2 pic's of shop made nose cap & rod tip. Then Barrel channel Acra-Glas bedded full length. ( very thin forearm & acra-glas adds plenty of extra strength.
-
Pic's of pipes on blank
-
Tom, IMO, you have put that project on "Fast-Trac"...sure is looking good.
Uncle Russ...
-
i'm retired uncle Russ, so have time to fiddle with guns & gear. Like it way tooo much ta stop....Tom
-
I sure like that fancy, one-off front sight Gunmaker. Is that one of your own design?
-
I'm afraid so Ric, just filing on a scrap of brass. supposed to be a leaf of some kind-- I think. I made the rear pipe skirt as well as thumb piece & inlay for rear sling stud. More pic's as I go along.....Tom
-
Keep those pictures coming!
Nothing beats a good Show & Tell when you're on a project such as this.
Uncle Russ...
-
Don't be sorry. I like it!
-
Couple a more pic's guys
-
Cut out a thumb piece & inlet it last nite.....Tom
-
I'm going to make this 24 bore fuzzee' an indian gun. Have never made one. It belongs to a Huron(Wayndote) indian either working for the french or on his own in the great lakes area about 1725-45 or so. Brass tacks on forearm, Iroquois cross on rt. butt stock, "Au Roi" (for the King) ahead of it. bone turtle on left butt behind where you mount the gun. Short barrel 26" for easy carry on canoe trips. Sorta HC I think, anyway that's what it is...Tom
-
Nice....Can't wait to see the finished product. Good pictures, great explanation of the steps.
-
Thank you Ric, Stock is about 80% shaped, lock be here 9th. All ahead full then. Should start looking like a real fuzzee' next week or so...Tom
-
Got lock yesterday & put plate on gun. Here's a pic.....Tom
-
Got Davis lock & home made tgr. on gun & it snaps real nice...
-
Got guard on the gun today.
-
Look's great!(for a garage gun! LOL) the ONLY thing I would do different is forget the turtle on the off side butt stock. Cheek rest or nuttin',IMHO.
-
Sweet!
-
turtle is eastern fertility symbol. Sooo as daddy to 4 rugrats, that's my totum.....Tom
-
This is turning into a fine looking weapon! I love these types of build alongs!
-
Thank you .....Tom
-
more pic's
-
IMO , she needs a little serpant side plate gunmaker . but thats just me
-
Thought about it Cap, But this' what I done did. Thinking about inlaying a top nut, a nut with a toothed flange-used in furniture making etc. under the side plate so I can screw on a bolt & ring for an over the shoulder sling, like cav. carbines of old????....Tom
-
Inlet side plate this morning
-
That side plate looks very much like the one on the US M1841 "Mississippi Rifle".
-
Those early American muskets were a direct copy of French mil. weapons---right down to METRIC threads.....Tom
-
Tom, I like what you're doing I like how you think....I mean I really get into that "little dab of this, splash of that, and then rub this in"...if you want something personally unique, it has to have that little bit of uniqueness added IMHO.
Not a thing in the world wrong with that in my mind.
Over the years, I've also done a few things outside that box of conventional wisdom, some were real well received while others were much less.
Looking back, I honestly can't say that in all likelihood, those not well received were just as much effort, if not more in some cases, than some of those others thought so highly of.
It's just you doing your thing, your own "Lil Fuzzee" .
I'm really getting a little antsy along about now, shouldn't be much longer until "we" shoot her, right?
Uncle Russ...
-
Added ring to lock bolt. I reconsidered the furn. nut, I think this is simpler....Tom
-
Here's the bolt. 8-32 with head cut off, thd 1/4" and brass lamp part soldered on.
-
Here's the bolt. 8-32 with head cut off, thd 1/4" and brass lamp part soldered on.
That's a purdy neat idea! :rt th
-
Keep this under yer bonnet RussB, I've been shooting a few "proof" loads here in the shop. Wads only a course. That Davis lock is sure some fast....Tom
-
Tom, I can see that you will not like this one. So you can throw it in the back of my truck. But you have to wait untill I put a mattress and a couple of blanket in there.
I can tell it will be top of the line.
LeeRoy
-
Guess I better keep an eye on you next time you drop in. Aged lock today....Tom
-
Tom
I enjoyed the visit.

-

-
That's a darn good lookn smoke pole Gunmaker. What's next on your list?
-
Funny you should ask Roaddog, got most a the parts for 2 16 bore smoothies short bbl. 26" & long 42". Both flint's in RH, 1 is spoken for (long) other who knows?? Then a .50 fast twist English game gun 30" bbl. For a client up to Reno. Stay tuned ....Tom
-
:happy :rotf
Uncle Russ...
-
Moved to English build....
-
That's a fairly fast twist, no?
Should be able to run a fairly heavy, 450gr plus, conical at about 1800 plus with a little load tinkering, wouldn't ya say?
Why did you choose the .50 for the platform?
Elkie and Deerie are the average man's safari?
With that 15/16 bbl, you'll be able to build a fire in that thing that will put some hurt on your shoulder!
Back when you lived in WA, you lived in what I always think of as one of the most beautiful places on earth.....Forks!
Never seen anything like it before, and I've certainly seen nothing better since.
Used to Steelhead on the Hoh and the Dickey, wonderful country, wonderful water.
Fished the Dickey for years until the Quileute closed the launch site outside La Push.
I used to fish the Queets too....Ox-Bow launch, IIRC, or something to that effect
I lived in Shelton for 20+ years before moving over here to Central WA....Moses Lake to be more precise.
Gave up my sled for a Walleye Boat. I can see the Lake, and I can see the boat launch at the end of the street, and that is just as it should be. A wonderful little town for an old retiree.
I'm about 30 or so minutes from the big river at Vantage....anytime I get that burning urge to pull some plugs, it ain't all that far away.
Keep up the good work!
Projects like yours will keep an old man awake all day. It don't get no mobeta than being able to cook up something in the mind, then go out in the shop and just do it!
Uncle Russ...
-
Sounds like a mirror to my life for 30 years. I've fished all those places as well, Have had 3 drift boats thru the yrs. The Hoh is my #1 river of choice. Never fished out a Vantage, just shot ducks & geese all around that area. Crab crk & Warden 2 places I spent a bunch a time. I truly miss it. I didn'y choose the .50 it's actually for a $$$ client. As far as load ??? around 100 gr. & some kinda conical is what he wants. Recoil, don't tell a soul but he also specified a super magnun Pacmayer pad!.....Tom

I have to give you credit, gunmaker...you did a fantastic job on that piece and we are all the better for seeing it. Thank you, sir...
-
I really enjoyed this post and the finished rifle looks great! I can't see the pictures in your last post though. I'm sure it is a problem on my end .

you 'er me ?? he-he.....Tom
That brings up a question I've had bounce'n around in my noggin for more than 45 years,.... back in the old trappin' days, when someone made mention of their "riflegun", could they have been referring to a smoothbore trade gun "loaded with ball", and NOT an actual rifle?????????
-
Nope. The addition of a ball doesn't put rifeling in the barrel. We can go on,but let's not highjack this thread. I'll start another in "Smoothbores" See ya there!
-
Here's a target. Shot yesterday, 60 g. 3f = #7 lead shot. 2 1/8" cards over pwdr, & 1 overall & 20 yd. 34 hit's on top 1/2 & 43 on bottom 1/2 !! I think "Moderate felt recoil, nothing like a modern 3" 12...I'm happy & so is guy who ordered one like it....Tom
-
Tom, is that a regular 8.5 x 11 piece of paper?
At twenty yds, that ain't shabby at all!
43 hits bottom half, 34 top half....70+ shot on that size of paper is not bad at all, considering there's only about 300 pellets in a full ounce of shot in that size, if I remember right.
Uncle Russ...
-
I forgot to add that uncle Russ. 8-1/2" X 11" I'm real happy with the little rascal....Tom
-
I have nooo idea where those pic's went off to. Here's complete gun
