And a pox be upon them.

Shocking news. It just gets tougher every day to enjoy this sport. Now there'll probably be a run on BP.

There are still more than a few USA sources for black powder and mail order is still the way for most of us to get it.

The real question right now isn't BP manufacturing or availability, it's if we will still be able to buy it via mail order.

I just checked Powder, Inc's website.  According to it, GOEX, Olde Eynsford, Schutzen and Swiss in Ffg granulations, all of them, are out of stock.
Now, it could be that their website is out of date, but if it isn't, that seems to be the name of the problem.  You cannot ship it if you don't have it.

You didn't really look far enough - maine powder house is loaded to the brim, powder valley has some but not all - and those are only the first two I checked ....

Not gonna happen, ya NEED real black powder.  There's plenty around, too.  Get yers now before the well dries up!

Hard to find 2f or 3f, so go for 1-1/2f or 1f - both will work well and are actually "period correct".  I've been using Swiss 1-1/2f for the last few months with no problem at all, and it helps in pan on damp days,

well y'all know how to light a fire under someone..hearing about these closings had me suddenly wanting more BP to up my current supply of 3# so I went on by my favorite supplier for all things ML, Buffalo Arms and sad to say they had no #2 anything and minimal anything else. they stated the same about the manufactures shutting down.
No #11 caps either but they did have a decent supply of musket caps , no 1/4-28 musket nipples tho in case I wanted to/need to convert my TC
I bought 300 musket caps for my '64 Springfield and thought about some 1.5F they had but a shipment of 2-3-4 f was coming.
I was told to be at the door at 8 am Thursday. " phones have been ringing off the hook so be here early".
looking to buy 10# of 2F hopefully or I will use 1.5F as needed. wont have # 11 caps till later, cant be shipped with powder apparently.

The beauty of the flintlock is that ignition starters are easy to acquire, if not found around and about locally.   8)

Sadly, I knew this day would come sooner or later... I always figured it would be later...

I sure hope the; NMLRA, NRA, NSSA, and all the clubs and Black Powder related organizations can come together (as well as the weekend plinkers), and do something about this to assure we have a BP Supplier source from somewhere.

I guess only time will tell.

For now I guess it's a bit more bow & arrow and rimfire shooting to satisfy my Range trips. 'course I'm lucky, I got a 25 yard archery lane here at my home in the side yard.

Black powder is used by the military, so it's not going the way of the dodo.

When this topic was hot, I wrote a note to Hodgdon expressing my feelings on their shuttering the plant.
Today, I received the following response:

We understand your frustration. We hope someone will come forward and continue to offer sporting powder to the public. There are many factors we had to consider here and sporting is a small part of the big overall picture.

So, there you have it, evidently we are just a pimple on the a$$ of the big picture.  Nice to know.

Ya know panic buying is my favorite way to shop.  :lol sign

any way, I thought about this for awhile and decided I am not going to run to the BP store and buy all they have but instead I am going to learn how to make BP in my kitchen, well shop at least.
watched a bunch of you tubers make the stuff in ten minutes and thought " well that looks easy" .
even watched a guy in period dress make it on a stump with a hatchet and handkerchief.  what could be easier right!

went to the hardware store and bought sulfur and stump remover and made my own Fir charcoal.   miserable failure x 3  :Doh!
So I went ahead and ordered some real chemicals from a pyro place and we'll see if i can avoid blowing myself up.
I figure its a good skill to have for future events.

I'm throwing my hat in the ring, too, and will venture into the making of holy black.  I'll start small with the "coffee filter" method but hope to like the product enuf to get into ball milling.

Some good resources for making black powder ...

Well, there are still Scheutzen and Swiss, so no need to panic.  DuPont used to be the big name in the US for the holy black.  Then it went away, if I recall because the plant blew up although I may be mistaken.  Anyway, that opened the way for Goex to take over the DuPont assets.  So now Goex is closed and up for sale.  There have been many other black powder companies which are not around anymore - have you found any Elephant powder lately?  Anyway, the world has not ended and if necessary, we can make our own or maybe even get powder for fireworks (a poor second choice, I know!) like the Boston Marathon bombers did.

I guess we'll just have to see where the cards fall.

I do expect we'll see some choices somewhere down the road. I believe black powder shooting is rather popular across the pond, so it's very possible we could see a door open here in the USA for their powder suppliers to seize the market on the real stuff,,, perhaps even open a supply outlet here in the States... And, as said above,,, some of us may resort to making our own (though I'm not quite there yet). However, to conserve what I have - for when I need it, I expect I'll be shooting the ol' Rimfire .22lr more often than in the past. And that's fun too!!!  :shake

Hopefully someone with black powder passion will take over the Goex plant.

However, what I see looming on the distant (near or far?) horizon is a Fed ban on shipping black powder, or making shipping so incredibly expensive that it could reach upwards of $70/lb - or LOTS more, considering inflation!

Rob, I have had those very thoughts myself, sorry to say...
