for folks way smarter than me! If a guy is contemplating changing a Caplock ignition over to a flinter.....how in heck would it be known as to what lock system to get to match up with the cutout in the Caplock stock? Also would there be an issue involving the trigger system and also what about the location of the ignition hole in the barrel??
I can build an aircraft engine but I'm dumb about these issues! :Doh!

Rick,.... first off, we need to know how the barrel is currently breeched, and whether it has a Patent Breech with a "snail", or has a breech plug with a "drum".
Also,.... what lock is on the gun is now?
Pictures of what you have will help a lot in helping you.
Also if you don't already have Track of the Wolf's catalog, you might want to get one,.... all the pictures of the locks and breeches in their catalog are actual size with additional measurements given, and that really helps when figurein' out breech and lock components. :bl th up

I have made the decision to not get involved in this project! I've got one good Flintlock and I'm not gonna take a chance on messing something up that I could very well cause by not knowing what the heck I'm doing! I learned a long time ago that there are lots of folks that are smarter than me about doing certain things and the best thing to do when needing an electrical line run......call an electrician! Same way about lots of other things and I've probably saved myself lots of $$$$$ by adhering to that rule! :toast

Rick,.... there's really not much you can do to "mess something up", as long as you can identify the lock you currently have and can find it's matching "mate" in flintlock. :bl th up
Also,.... if your percussion gun has a "breech plug and drum", all that's necessary is to screw the drum out of the barrel and replace it with a vent liner that has matching threads. :bl th up
If your percussion gun has a Patent Breech (w/integral snail) then the breech plug must be removed and the barrel "rebreeched" with a matching Patent Breech (sans/snail) that will accept a vent liner. :bl th up
and finally, after first removing the "cock/hammer" from the new flintlock,.... you'll have to clamp the new lock in it's mortise, and "drill and tap" the lock plate for the lock bolt, but that's no biggy as you already have the hole through the stock to use as a guide. :bl th up

Except that won't work with CVA or, I believe, Traditions rifles. The drum goes clear through the barrel, and screws in on both sides. Then it is drilled out from the bore. Their touch hole is just the drum cut off even with the barrel flat. I found this out the hard way when I had the flats milled down on the Hodgepodge rifle so it was 7/8" across. The touch hole eventually shot loose as seen in the photo. Captchee eventually swapped out the Deer Creek barrel for a Colerain for me. We had quite a discussion about this on the TradRag site, with photos from other guns.

Winter Hawk,.... you are right about how CVA and Traditions install their drums and touch holes, they are "the exception to the rule" when compared to how other muzzleloaders are breeched. :bl th up
