Spotted Bull,.... I hope you realize you've partnered up with a blind man. :laffing :shake 8)

With regrets, I must beg out of this match this year. I really do not want to break my perfect record of signing up for it and never getting to participate. Two Steps, you're on your own this time. Have a great time, friends, and hope to do it again next year.

anymore want to shoot the Mike Fink?
-
Sounds good. Thanks SharpStick. I’ll try not to shoot too low and drag us down.
Same here. I haven't been able to shoot for a couple months.
Maybe I'll start off with a some practice shots right at Fink's nose. After a few I figure he'll start ducking and I'll hit the 10 slot on the cup. ::)
-
Anyone else want to shoot the Mike Fink and needs a partner????????????????????????
-
It’s July 1st so I broke out the .36 flinter and started this Mike Fink shoot off. Good group but not a very high score. I’m counting on SharpStick to knock off a bunch of 10’s. Joe, is this post good enough or should I mail my target to you?
-
Good shooting PaulK... :bl th up
Anytime ol' Mike Fink doesn't end up with a hole in his head - is good shooting, and a score of 40 ain't bad at all! I have you posted... :bl th up
-
Thanks Joe, I had it at 38 but 40 sounds better to me.
-

Here's the scoring rules for Mike Fink;
Scoring will be based on NRA (cut or touch) the higher scoring (line / ring) will receive the higher score value... Exceptions; Any shot touching Mike Finks Head will be scored a "Minus 10" ...
So you did just fine, Paul :bl th up
-
Thanks Joe, I’m shooting that .36 flint a lot and really enjoying it. Very accurate at the shorter ranges and doesn’t pound me into the ground like the bigger calibers can do at times. Just a fun gun for plinking around with.

If I can shoot that well, I think we'll do fine.
I haven't shot anything for a couple months. I'd better go knock the dust off the cap gun and brush up on my technique. I got new glasses so maybe I'll be able to see the cup this year. I should do all right if seeing Mike's ugly mug clearly doesn't give me jitters.
-

I'm going to go with my Ed Rayl Barreled .40 caliber Dickert this year... When one thinks about it, the smaller caliber could have somewhat of an advantage in perhaps eliminating that outer edge of the ball touching ol' Mike Fink's head under that cup and rendering a (dare I say it) minus 10... :Doh!
-
The .36 flint I’m shooting has a 46” barrel and is incredibly accurate out to about 40 yards. When I shot Mike this year I shot 3, 5 shot rounds from 40 yards to warm up then dropped right down to 25 yds for the scoring round. After shooting the 40 yd rounds it almost makes the cup look like a beach ball from 25 yds. The key for me is not to take a break between the 40 yd and 25 yd rounds.
-
Paul, I've never taken any warm up shots with my Rayl barrel Ed made for me... I had Ed put a 1 in 72 twist in it along with .010 depth round bottom rifling... It's 7/8" x 36" long and I made it in caplock configuration (Large Siler Lock)...
I've fed this rifle 3fg, 2fg, and even 1fg, and it'll shoot them all without having to worry about swabbing (in fact, I've never swabbed between any shots with this rifle and that includes when using the 1fg load that I test ran (if I recall I took eleven straight shots with a 45 grain charge under a .018 patch and .395 ball. I truly believe I could have kept going without swabbing even after those 11 shots... I could never do that with my .40 cal Green Mnt Brl...
This was my "pre" Retirement rifle I made 14 or 15 years ago when we started the TMA... It's won its share of medals at State Shoot, but my ol' (Late) friend Jim Potter, he use to knock me down to a 2nd, or 3rd spot Medal finish with his .40 caliber (except on the 50 yard NMLRA Bear Target) at our State ML Shoot... I think the old .40 still has a little left in'er... I hope!!! :shake
-
Sounds like a super gun Joe. I don’t have the experience shooting competition like you but the 2 guns that seem to naturally fit me and I shoot the best are this .36 flinter built in the Southern Mountain style and believe it or not my .62 French Fusil smoothbore.
-

-
Joe, just got off the phone with Sir Michael and he's interested in shooting the Mike Fink , I will be his partner also if we have room for another team
-
Okay, I was going to shoot the cu this morning but found I didn't have the target printed out or saved on my hard drive. There seem to be TWO MF targets, MF-TC and MF-TC2. It looks like the first is larger than the second and Paul shot the smaller one. I will print that out and shoot it also so as not to have an advantage over him, although the instructions say to use MF-TC (the larger one).
Could we have a little clarification here? Or do we shoot which ever one we feel like? ::) :o
Today is shot, tomorrow I stay home with my Sweetie, Sunday is Church, Monday the plumbing guys come to redo the sewer line... I may not get to shooting again until Thursday; :Doh! I hope the Hodgepodge Rifle is up to the task!
~Kees~
-
I just printed one of each and it looks like they’re the same size to me. One has some shading but that’s the only difference I see?
-
I was looking at the .PDFs, the TC has the cup touch the top of the page while his chin touches the bottom, TC2 has 1/2" or so from the top of the page to the cup and an inch +/- between the chin and the bottom of the page. Printer settings would make a difference on how they come out.
I'm probably making a mountain out of a molehill and no one is going to worry about it.... :Doh! i hadn't even noticed the shading! ;banghead;
~Kees~
-
MF-TC is what we usually use, but IMHO, I don't think it makes a lot of difference which one you use.
However, the Rules call for the MF-TC target - so use that target.
My MF-TC target [just as a reference], the backside of the cup top (at the top of the heavy line is about 3/8" from the top of the page). :shake
-
Joe, just got off the phone with Sir Michael and he's interested in shooting the Mike Fink , I will be his partner also if we have room for another team
That is fine Beaverman, I also teamed you with Sir Michael...
Remember, shoot only one target and your score of that one target will also be used /tallied with both your Partner's target's. :shake

Hey guys, I’m thinking that if I shot the wrong Mike Fink target i should shoot it over again. What do you think? Makes no difference to me.

Who told you that you shot the wrong target, Paul?
You shot the required target stated in the rules - so your score stands. :shake
One thing one should keep in mind is that not all printers are equal in there 100% sizing... They are not like a copying machine...
-
OK, thanks
-
OK, thanks

Thought I better get my Mike Fink Target shot and posted so's my partner don't dis'claim me... :toast :shake
I finally had a good MF target after all these years. I used my; .40 Ed Rayl Barreled Dickert w/ Large Siler Cap Lock...
Seems like t's been years since I shot a decent score. :)

Rondo, counting today you still have 8 days... :bl th up

Excellent, Joe! :hairy :hairy

Mine will be done this weekend.
-
Joe,
That lowest hole in the cup appears to be cutting the low line in the cup. Does that mean the shot advances to hitting the top of his skull? Seems to me that shot would certainly part ol' Mikes hair for sure. Regardless, that is a mighty fine group there. Glad I am not in the competition, I'd a just lost.
-
That lowest hole in the cup appears to be cutting the low line in the cup. Does that mean the shot advances to hitting the top of his skull?
It's still in the cup, not cutting the outside of the line so ol' Joe is good to go. That sure is a mighty fine group! I have to sneak out and shoot my target right quick like, and hopefully get all five shots in the cup....
~Kees~

Kees is correct... The scoring is correct, the ball is not touching any part of Mike Finks head.
-
Aaargh! Mike Fink survived another day, which is to say, his cup did. I drove the 30 minutes out to the range, set up a practice target (paper plate with a piece of black duct tape in the center) and fired three shots for a lovely tight group. "Okay" says I, "now to shoot the cup off of MF's head. Mike, where are you? Mike?? Mike???" The rascal was still at home, lounging by the downstairs bookshelf! :Doh! Curses, foiled again. Fired another two shots with again, excellent results and bagged it.
Dave old partner, I plan to get out again in the next couple of days to shoot this one more time and I hope to bring everything with me so I can actually get this done! ;D The third time is the charm, right? :bl th up

Don't feel bad Kees, at one of our monthly shoots, I got up in the am, poured the coffee, loaded up the gear and headed to the range, loaded everything up, range box, bag, horn, thermos everything! EXCEPT THE GUNS!
-
I imagine everyone has had something like that happen to them.
A fellow that used to be in our club showed up to hunting camp and he had brought everything he needed with him, except gun powder. His horn was bone dry, not a grain to be seen. Somehow or another, he wound up with the moniker, Empty Horn. So, being the cool sort of guy he is, he embraced the name. When signing his name to something, he would sign - E. Horn. Darn, but I miss all those guys, shooting and rendezvousing with them. It was a lot of fun.

I just shot my Mike Fink target,.... not sure how it'll score though.

Rondo, I'm seeing;
4 6 6 8 8 - 32 pts
I'm not sure if the top Right hole is touching any part of the "6" line (so for now I have it listed as a "4") - (this may change when I get your target).
It appears to me the top left hole has cut / touched the 6 pt line. :bl th up
-
Thanks Joe,.... that's sort'a what I "unofficially" came up with too. :hairy
Although I shot this year's target with a rifle,..... I'm thinkin' maybe I should've used my pistol like last year. :laffing :bl th up

Well Partner, I got out and shot at the cup, missed once and didn't do too good on the rest but at least I don't have any -10 for cracking the Fink in the forehead! I'm figuring 24.... It'll be in the mail to Joe tomorrow.

How about covering up MIke's face with some paper and then shoot the cup?
-
Well Ole Mike didnt quite make it out unscathed in my target. Hard to see when your glasses keep fogging up from humidity.
But no excuses. I just need to get out and put lead down range more often. Joe does this look like 30 to you? And do we need to mail these to you?

Wow, Spotted Bull, that's literally a hair away from being a perfect 50 points. :bl th up
That's what makes the Mike Fink shoot such an enjoyable, frustrating challenge.

Actually - no;
My findings after blowing the picture up to 500% are as follows;
Two hits are touching the head - so the score is +10 +10 +10 = +30 then -10 -10 = -20 score (Giving you a score of +10
But it's a heck of a group! And there's no need to mail it in this year... If our "pandemic" is over next year, we'll go back to the mail in of all targets.
-
I'm not seeing the second head hit. Both on the right side are above the black line. The far left shot, if you look close at the top edge of the shot you can see the ball impact. That's above the line as well.

One half inch higher would have been a near perfect target, Spotted Bull. Nice grouping though and good shooting! :toast
Btw, I had that problem with my glasses a few weeks ago in the often humid Hudson Valley.

Well, with dMarsh's target on the way, we only have BlackpowderBill to hear from, and we'll have 100% participation... I'd say that's a pretty good turn out. folks!!! :toast

Joe changed it back to 1 head hit.

I just shot my Mike Fink target,.... not sure how it'll score though.
Putting it in the mail now. :bl th up

Rondo, I'm seeing;
4 6 6 8 8 - 32 pts
I'm not sure if the top Right hole is touching any part of the "6" line (so for now I have it listed as a "4") - (this may change when I get your target).
It appears to me the top left hole has cut / touched the 6 pt line. :bl th up
Rondo, I received your target, and by golly that top right shot is indeed a "6" as it is touching the white line where the black line transitions to the white line - which gives you the "6" :hairy
So, what we have is; 6 6 6 8 8 = 34 :shake

More thanks to you Joe. Another fun time. Not much else will get me outside in July when average high for them month is 109.8
Yeah, Paul, I think we should partner up again next year. But I get the feeling we'll have to improve a little to keep ahead of No Powder and Ohio Joe.
Also :hairy to Joe for the best single score 46!

How would yall feel about a spring and fall Mike shoot?

Ol' No Powder and I just keep plugging away and we sure do enjoy it. We've partnered up many a years, and I've had some great phone conversations with him over those years... We'll team up again in 2021 and give'r another ride!
Sharpstick, you and Paul are a tough combination for sure! Congrats again! :shake :hairy

Spotted Bull,
I don't know about two Mike Fink Shoots a year - I kind'a feel it detracts from its lure, as it's the one annual Match that is most talked about, and I feel we'd lose that if we went two a year.
However, I'm open to moving the MF Shoot to a Spring or Fall shoot if everyone was in agreement with it, or just leaving it in its traditional spot since the TMA started back in 2005. :shake

I'm always up for more shoots. Will Mike wear the -20 point mask next time?
-
:yessir: I am always up for more shoots. Thanks Joe for putting this on and scoring. Well done to my partner Winter Hawk and hope we'll partner on the next one. :hairy :toast
