Title: A Simple Powder Horn
Post by: Bigsmoke on March 10, 2024, 08:18:59 PM
I have been playing around here the last couple of weeks, looking for something simple to build as a getaway from working on the screw tip and the applied tip horns that have occupied me for this year so far.
I believe I have something here that will work, it is pretty simple and easily repeatable.  Here is a shot of the left side of the horn.

And the right side of the horn

A close up of the nose, showing a simple horn strap groove.

Finally, a shot of the baseplug, showing the decorative grooves in the wood and also the ringed finial

The baseplug is made out of a single piece of maple.  It is not drilled out but it is left solid.  Personally, I feel that especially with a horn this size, the difference that makes in weight is rather a moot point.  The baseplug is affixed with a ring of hot glue, which not only holds it in place, it also assures an air and water tight seal.  For decorative purposes, there are also eight birch pegs securing the plug in place.

I did not want to lathe turn a finial onto the baseplug, so I decided to use a sling swivel stud with a formed brass ring.  If I make further horns like this, I will probably use a small key ring instead.  I think my soldering ability and skill level actually detracts from the overall feeling of the horn.

.

Nice work !   :toast

I know you said "simple", but IMHO it's screaming for some minimal scrimshaw (if yer up for it).

I would be proud to carry that!  'Course I gladly carry the cheap made-in-Mexico horn I've used for almost 40 years so take that however you want!

LIke the shape, color, butt and simplicity of that horn, from these pics the tip looks thick and blunt to me, was that done on purpose?
