8 Bore Boxlock
« on: May 06, 2009, 11:47:05 PM »
Last fall Wyosmith listed this for me on this site as a speculation gun I was building, so I thought it would be appropriate to show off the finished rifle.
It's boxed up and ready to ship to it's new owner in the next couple days.
This is an 8 bore (.835) built on a Pete Allen boxlock action, they are representative of the Edwin Wesson actions of the 1860's. The rifle has a finished weight of just under 11 pounds. The load data is written on the sight in target. The stock is Rock Maple that has been stained and then oil finished, the metal is rust blued.

If you would like to read about the build, it is documented in the current projects section of my website at: http://www.freewebs.com/stolzergunsmithing/apps/blog/ or at the Black Powder Firearms Forum, there is a link to the BPFF in the links section on this site.

Enjoy

Mighty nice.
11 pounds?  Ufda, sounds a bit light to me.  I imagine the thing rears back a bit when you pull the triger?
I had looked at that Pete Allen action a time or two.  How do you like it?  It seemed pretty sound.
What twist is the barrel and who made it?

Thank You
I'm not sure who the Barrel maker is, you'd have to ask wyosmith, I bought it off of him last year. Actually the recoil isn't bad, 11 pounds makes it just about right, heavy enough to tame the recoil but light enough to be a field carry rifle. The twist is 1:104" I like the actions that Pete cast, I also have one of his smaller boxlock actions sitting in my shop for an upcoming project.

Very nice. Looks like she's a shooter, too.

Riley/MN,
Thank You. It shoots nice, and the owner should be able to develop a load that really shoots well.

What does the owner plan on shooting with it?

What does the owner plan on shooting with it?   Elephants and all things smaller fit into the category of what does an 8 Bore kill. I honestly don't know if he has any planned hunts lined up for this rifle.
