Title: AUGUST POSTAL TARGETS
Post by: Nessmuk on August 01, 2023, 02:12:39 PM
August Postal Match Targets

This month we're shooting the same target as in the famous movie "Sgt York".
I figured if Gary Cooper can hit the center 5 times, so can we!!

The scoring is anything in the notch is 10 points (including the top line), anything in the black is 5 points.

Never having seen the famous movie "Sgt. York", I can only speculate that the bottom of the white V is where all of our shots should be clustered, right?

And, should this be printed out in landscape instead of portrait?  It makes a difference size-wise....

Thanks,

Since there are no scoring lines in the "notch", and Nessmuk said anything in the notch is 10 points and anything in the black is 5 points, well, the notch is 10 and the black is 5.

From what distance and shooting position?

Joe, I believe that target is usually shot offhand at 25 yards.  If you stretch it out to 50, it is a real challenge.
I don't know, Nessmuk - what is the official answer?

Thanks John. Our local club use to shoot the "V" Notch Targets (offhand from 25 yards - 5 targets  with 1 shot at each target for score - measured from the center of the Ball) to see who could bury their ball into the V notch without touching any part of the black... This is where the small calibers came into play and I used my .40 cal Ed Rayl Barreled Rifle).

Anyway, it was fun and frustrating at the same time.  :laffing

Guys, you should print it in "Landscape" mode. After watching the shooting scene in Sgt York several times, I guesstimate the distance between 25 and 30 yards. Let's use 25 yards as standard. Standing offhand is standard for our postal matches.

I can't believe someone has never seen "Sgt. York", Gary Cooper's best performance!

Hey everybody, on Vudu, for $3.99, you can watch Gary Cooper in the '42 movie as Sgt. York. You'll not only see that great movie, but get some hints about this months rondy target.  :bl th up Come on all you guys who said you would shoot in the postal but haven't done so -- watch the movie, get inspired, support Nessmuk and shoot! Bet you'll be glad you did.

That was great!!

Love the kibitzing from the crowd.  Sounded just like some shootin' matches I have been at.

Thank you, Joe!  I am now educated, or at least a bit more than I was before!

Now they were shooting over a log; I expect offhand will be a little tougher.   :laffing

I think at the 1:23 mark in the video, that's ol' (young) Ward Bond casting round balls. I've always thought this was one of the better "reenacted" scenes that showed how things most likely were really done back in those days.  :shake

I hope all you guys who shoot those rock locks made note of the fact that every one of the shooters, including Alvin York, was savvy enough to use a caplock!

Indeed they were.  :yessir:

Did you all also notice the long "Ramrod / wiping sticks" being used...

Yessiree, I did notice that which surprised me.  Years ago, don't ask how many, there was an article about Alvin York in one of the NRA publications, probably American Rifleman.  In it was a photo of him aiming a m/l rifle off to the right of the camera, and I seem to remember it was a flintlock.  But age and the passing of time may have clouded my memory....  ::)

Well, in all fairness, WH, I'd bet my bottom dollar that the 1940 movie industry, especially since WWII was occuring, didn't check to see what rifle types were actually used. Their prop room most likely had a pile of caplocks, so that's what they chose. My comment about cap over flint usage was in jest.

It would have been nice if they'd of had some flintlock rifles in that mix of shooters.

I wondered about the lack of flintlocks, also. Remembering the story took place around 1910 or so and percussion caps had been around for 50+ years , it's not unreasonable to think most serious shooters changed to caplocks. These men were paying  scarce cash money to shoot for meat, I'd think they would use the most reliable rifles they owned.
