It was probably just harassing fire...

The Whitworth rifle saw extensive use with the Confederate sharpshooters in the American Civil War, claiming the lives of several Union generals, including Major General John Sedgwick, one of the highest-ranking Union officers killed during the Civil War, shot on 9 May 1864, at Spotsylvania.

Nessmuk:
If I was being shoot at from a 1000 yards away and could hear the bullets hitting close by, I would most definitely feel "Harassed"

Firewalker:
My guess is it was a stray shot. That being said it has gone down in history as a sharpshooter shot so I’m sure one of the shooters took credit for it saying offhandedly” dang I was aiming for the right one”.

waksupi:
Berdan's Sharpshooters for the most part were using heavy target rifles for their work.
