Title: Mountain man coat? Where?
Post by: mark davidson on November 10, 2009, 10:16:24 AM
I want to buy a knee length "mountain man" type coat to hunt in. I do not re-enact nor am I attempting any period correctness. I just want a thick knee length outter coat to wear hunting, something I can button up and put my big thick belt around and head out. I hunt strictly off the ground with my custom flintlock hawken and I like my lap and knees covered and want the coat long enough to sit on. Wool would be ideal. Where can I find such a coat? Any websites or ideas???

Sounds like a capote would work for you. You could try a google search for that. Or keep an eye out in the trading post.

We have two and they work great. Made out of wool blankets.

I am not sure what a capote is. Can you describe it? What kind of wool blankets were your two made from?  Did you make them yourself?

Sportsmans Guide has a deal on them http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/original-mountain-man-hooded-capote.aspx?a=585812   "The Capote (French for "cape") was commonly crafted from naturally warm wool blankets. These garments were the epitome of simplicity... worn by 19th century woodsmen, hunters, trappers, explorers and the like in North America and Canada"

Mark, check out this link too.

I thought Northwest traders would have more pics on their web site, but they do have a lot in their flyers. Click around their web site and you will find a few on there.

Here's some options...

Thanks to all. I really liked the coats on NW trader. I liked the one in sportsman's guide too and it was pretty cheap. Jerry, thanks for the heads up on Toni; I will give them a shout. I could not see the pictures in your post. It may be my computer or filter or something cause that happens a lot. Thanks again for the info. If I cannot find what I want, I may get some wool blankets from army surplus and order a pattern and make one. That would be a fun project.

I really like your coat Captchee. The only problem is the hourglass back...can it be made with a grandfather clock back instead?

the pattern i used is in Hanson’s "the long hunter sketchbook"
its on page  16 and 17 under George Rogers Coat .
i add on a cape the pattern doesn’t call for one  .  But i really like it , as not only does it help keep me warmer but in a heavy rain  the wool of the cape gets wet but my shoulders stay  very much warm and dry .
the same sketchbook has a pattern for 18 and 19th century   hunting shirts in it . i have made capote’s from that pattern as well . You will have to use graph paper and enlarge the patterns as they are not full size .
if i recall , the scale is 1/3

One of these days I hope to get around to making  one out of brain tan . Just got to find the time

Here is a simple pattern for a blanket coat:

This is the pattern I used to make the coat I hunt in during the Michigan fall and winter seasons.
