Favorite Old Sayings
« on: July 02, 2020, 01:43:42 PM »
Winter Wolf is responsible for this thread (to be fully transparent, as they now like to say)...He posted that we had both used the same old saying, "my get up and go has done got up and went." Well, that got me thinking about how many of my father's sayings, idioms, and expressions can no longer be heard. So, I thought it might be fun to share one or two of your favorite oldies but goodies...

One of my father's sayings when someone was having a string of bad luck or problems was that "a skunk must have pissed in his tracks."  :luff: :luff: :luff:

Anyone outside of Texas ever heard that one?

Well, I can't rightly remember where I heard this one, but I do remember it as one of my favorites;

When I worked with boy scouts I always chuckled at the way a bunch of boys attempt to pass through a door or gate or any small passage because it reminded me of this expression I'd heard from some local cowboy when I was young:

"It's like two cows goin' through a one cow chute."
The trouble with doing things right the first time is no one realizes how hard it was.
Often, however, the following is more applicable.
I stand corrected, a position somewhat painful to achieve, but once there, is quite satisfying.

Ray I've been in Texas since 1986 I've never heard that one...

Interesting...I just always figured it was a South Texas saying...but would love to find out its origin.

Got to say I am enjoying seeing some of these expressions. I know there are a ton of them out there.

Another unique saying came from an old lady who lived on the property next to our when we moved onto a farm in the mountains of Virginia. She had lived a hard scrabble life and was tougher than seasoned oak.

One example: when she was a young teen she had her tonsils removed with no anesthesia or pain meds...

Another time she was crossing her field to visit us when she was charged by a bull. Since she was crippled in one foot (the one on which she always wore a black rubber boot) she stopped and faced the bull. When he reached her she hit him between the eyes as hard as she could with her stock cane. According to her, the bull went to his knees...and she proceeded on her way to visit us...

A favorite expression of hers which I have never heard anywhere else; "Dead as four o'clock."
