That video Muley posted is the same one you linked to, Rob.  I too am trying to learn how to knap, as I have a box full of dull flints. How hard should you tap the flint?  :)

Oh ok. I didn't watch the first one. My bad.

Don't you hate it when someone posts a video that's already been posted?

I see you're in the AMM. I always wanted to join them. I've gotten too old now. You do some pretty hard core trekking i'm not sure I could do now. I'll be 74 next month.

Quote from: "JStanley"
I found me a great knapping "hammer" in the scrap box at work. Not PC, HC or even purty but boy howdy is it the perfect fit to the edge of my flints. Held by the copper tube, perpendicular to the lock plate in just a few light pecks the edge looks like a razor!  The flats on the brass hex nut are just under an inch in length.
IMHO, that is just about as "Buckskinner" as a feller can get...find something useful, use it!

Uncle Russ...

Good post, it made me get off my butt last night and get out into my workshop and make a proper knapping hamer - other then the one I had been using that was made from an Allen Wrench... This one is made from 1/4" copper with a 12 penny nail set firmly into it as the handle. You can see I've wasted no time getting leather on the handle that I'll trim down in a little while.

Okay, wasn't all that happy with the first knapping hammer I did late last night, so I did another. It looks better to me, but I'll also use the one I made last night. The new one is the top one.
