Title: An Alternative Knife Sheath
Post by: PetahW on April 04, 2017, 07:59:23 PM
.

I started to think about making a knife sheath from something other than leather (no, not Kydex), and wanted to see how a wooden sheath might work.   ::)

Soooooo, I grabbed a boughten blade that I installed a brass cross guard & an Ebony grip onto last year, and a leftover section of a 4"x3/4" Walnut plank, which I trimmed to size.

I then cut out what would be the strap portion of the wood, to allow that the handle was thicker than the blade.

Then, I marked what would be the insides of the front/back of the blade pouch, prior to inletting them for the blade.

After the fit was right, I glued the front to the back, and removed the wood that wasn't to be part of the sheath.

It was then time to cut out a section of walnut to make a belt loop, and glue it to the back of the sheath.

After I shaped the squared belt loop down & smoothed off the corners, I decided to add an Ebony collar to the throat of the sheath, where the blade would enter, then shaved the Ebony down even with the body of the sheath.

A little stain & topcoat finished the sheath (I couldn't resist decorating the face ; ) ).

IDK if I could have gotten away using thinner wood in both the sheath back and/or the "belt loop" - but might try that next (or, maybe modify this one).
