New Furniture for Camp

I recently completed a new piece of furniture for use in my camp during Rendezvous.  It is a wash stand that is based on an early 1800s piece.  

Here are pictures of the original


This is my version


I used it for the first time at Ravensdale and it exceeded all my expectations.  It was so wonderful to be able to wash up and get ready for the day in my tent without fussing with what goes were or having to wash up in public.  Besides my small stove to heat up my morning tea followed by wash water warmed the tent up nicely making getting dressed that much more pleasant a task. :lol:

Basically I just looked at the picture and made some basic decisions.  The shelves had to be just under half the height of the piece and the top shelf needed to be about the same height of the bathroom vanity.  The width was pretty much arbitrary based on the size of the basin bowl I found.  I used two 2ft long turned spindles cut in half and attached to a 2x2 at the top and in the middle.  The top and intermediate styles on the back and sides were sized based on looking at the photos.

I made one departure from the original.  The sides of the original hinged 270 deg around to the back for packing.  I looked for a long time and could not find any small 1-1/2" tall hinges with 2" wide leaves that were not drilled (the holes had to be toward the outer edge of the leaves so that there would be wood to bite when mounted on the required 45 deg beveled edge.

I added a narrow side piece on each end of the back frame to accommodate the cleat on the underneath side of the shelves and the thickness of the leg fonts so the sides would fold flat against the front.

On the whole it came out pretty good I think?

After having either a diamond or a small trapper tent for years,it's absolutely AWSOME to be able to stand inside the lodge and wash up with warm water. HEAVEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :hey-hey
