#10 Percussion Caps

I have a #10 cap making kit coming.  Heard good and not-so-good things about rolling yer own, I'll be the judge I guess.

Rather than use aluminum cans to form the cap shells I have some .005" copper sheet instead.  And rather than forming the cups with a hammer I'll be using a 1/4 ton press.

Also will experiment with punching out paper cap pistol caps to use as the ignition, as well as the compound slurry mix that comes with the kit.

Like flinters, it'd be nice to be a bit more self sufficient than to have to rely on commercially made primers.

I've seen #11s and 209s but not a single #10 anywhere for over a year.

These are the folks I usually deal with when purchasing powder, and it looks like they have the #10 caps on hand... With this said, you may have to buy a box of 10 (100 cnt) tins... Have you tried all your options in your area gun stores?

I'm hoping the DIY cap method will work!

You could use #11 Caps by pinching the cap on the Nipple, but if you do - I would suggest only loading one chamber at a time to avoid any possibility at all of a chain fire... At least you'd get some trigger time for fit and feel of the Revolver.

I don't know if October Country is still carrying caps or not.
When I owned it we always had a good inventory of CCI and RWS caps on hand, BUT, that was 18 years ago and things change over that amount of time.
It wouldn't hurt to give them a call.  Or check their web page.

Tubing can be placed around a larger cap to mitigate flashing another nipple as well as retaining that cap, if #11s are used in place of #10s - I don't wanna go that route.

I'll also be making paper cartridges.  I just made a batch of nitrate paper using Spectracide and it works purty darn good.

I have the kit for no. 11 caps, I should break it out again.  I think you will find the hammer to be a lot faster than a press, please keep us informed on how well that works.  I only made one batch with mine, half didn't work.  My fault really, I probably didn't put enough of the chemicals in.  I then put it aside because of other projects and didn't get back to it.    I see it lying in the closet and that's about as far as I get with playing with it.

I had forgotten about the little Percussion Cap Keeper... I have used them in the past... Shows how long it has been since I shot any of my revolvers... I see these "Percussion Cap Keeper" are available on E-Bay, but I bet sporting goods stores that handle firearms just may have some on hand.
