Flat Style Powder Horns
« on: October 05, 2019, 03:52:06 PM »
My #1 preference in a powder horn = A Flat Horn ( often called a Scottish Flat Powder Horn )

Why = IMHO this style horn  is easier to carry (fits closer to my body) & it fits my hand better. ++
BEAVERMAN made & gifted it to Me.!!

Niice horn, Jack.  The old Beaverthing did a nice job on it.
I have made my share of them and always considered them a pain in the a$$ to make.  I'd just as soon not make another one of them.  But, as they say, Oh heck, I forgot what it is that whoever it is says.  Duh.  Don't you just love Senior Moments?
I have one that Earl Cureton made for me that I carried for a while with my Tenn M/R.  It was OK, but eventually gave up on that.  Truly prefer a rounded horn or a natural shape one.

I have a flat horn "in the makin'" right now,.... at least I've gotten as far as makin' it flat, I still need to make a butt plug for it.  :bl th up

It should fit nicely in my shootin' bag for a day's worth of huntin', once I've finished it.  :)

I've got a flat horn. I got it from one of the guys here on the forum a few years back.
I've hunted with it a few times and I like the way it tucks in high and tight on / over my bag....and the spout is always up, no matter what, and I do like that part.

I'm not sure if I like it better than a round horn, but so far I find myself really liking this little thing.
I'm also not sure how much it holds, but I'm guessing 8 or 10oz. of powder. I remember when I filled it the first time I was thinking, it held a lot more powder than I had expected....I'm guessing I can easily get about 60/70 shots using FFFg at 70gr which is plenty of powder for a hunt.
( I'll have to empty it and actually measure how much it does hold....now that you guys have brought this to mind.)

Here it is with an old, very beat up pouch I made sometime back in the 1970s......
You can also see part of my patch-knife that I made from a saw blade, which is good because it is flexible...that particular old knife has dressed out everything from Cottontails and a few Deer to an Cow Elk, and serves quite well as my dinner plate knife too....lol
Even an old blind hog finds an Acorn every once in a while.

Thank you sir, this one was really frustrating me when I had it in my book press. So much I left it in there as punishment for a few months :laffing, then one day I thought well lets give this another shot ,its either gonna work or end up as scrap!  :*:
This winter I will try to flatten a buffalo horn, just trying to decide what wood to use for the butt.
