Anybody know or am I gonna hafta start measuring?
« on: March 19, 2010, 11:31:09 PM »
Hey would any of yall know the powder measure ratios to say a few empty centerfire casings??

What I mean is does anyone use a center fire case as a powder measure?? Like how much 3F will a empty 357 cartridge hold? a 30/30 cartidge? a 44 mag cartidge?

I figure I'm gonna have to measure anyway ..... and probably just take a cut off wheel or file and shorten them to specifics. (I got some 32 longcolt empties I HAVE to turn in to a powder measure for a 32 smoke pole!) I was just thinking there may be someone on here that could save me a few pours of cornmeal in my measurer to findy outy.
It's not what you've done. It's how you did it.

That is how I do it whenever I want to know. I get my black powder and a sheet of paper to pour it over so that I can pour it back into my can when I am done measuring.
Take only what you need and leave the rest

Dixie Gun Works Catalog has list of grain wt of BP, oz of 7 1/2 shot for different cal cartridge cases. Doesn't list 44mag but has 44WCF-41gr, 44 S & W- 39gr, 44 Colt- 35gr. Lot of interesting stuff & info in the back of catalog worth the $5 it costs. I'd  copy & print  the list but don't know if it's legal. BH

no no Bison, You misunderstand me bro. I'm sorry. I'm not wanting to LOAD 30/30s or 44 cartridges with black powder. I am going to make a few powder measures for my smoke poles out of empty cartridges. I was just wondering if I am going to have to just do them like an antler measure or other hollow measure and put in a load, mark it and file/saw/grind it to that mark .... OR if someone else may have already done this and actually KNOW about how much powder certain empty cartidge cases will hold.

These are the grain wts for using these different size casings as a BP powder measure even shows how to make a BP measure & shot dipper. Guess I didn't explain clearly. Lists casings from 22 short to 45-70. Say for instance you wanted to throw a 24 grain weight of BP for your .32 you could use a 38 Spcl casing for a powder measure. I'll just go ahead and list them. Never heard of some of those cartridges.  BH  I don't think I'd be allowed to talk about cartridges here. :)

I have .32shortR.F.-but it doesn't have any markings other
than "D" for Dominion Ammunition-You should be able to find
lots of different .32 centrefire brass that obviously will be
better labled.

What size of load do you use in the .32?
You might try a Winchester .32spl. and trim the
case down to suit.
