Title: Casting Safety

I didn't know where else to post this, but what do youse guys wear and do when casting projectiles?

I use a Lee Production Pot IV bottom pour lead furnace.  I open the roll-up garage door and the windows over my work bench for ventilation.  I wear denim bib overalls, a long sleeve denim shirt and leather work shoes.   If I didn't already wear glasses, I'd definately wear safety glasses or a face shield.

Right now, (10-30-09) MidwayUSA has the Lee Pro 4 20 Lb.  casting furnace on sale.  It is an excellent deal on a very good lead pot for CHEAP!.

all the clothes are great,but if you do not wear eye protection you may just not have a need to cast anything if that lead pops into your eyeballs!

Garage roll-up and back door open, small fan blowing across the bench, face shield, welder's gloves, my leather turning apron over a Carhartt jacket.

I've had the same Lee bottom-pour pot (the littler one) for about 20 years. Worth it.

Harbor Freight has a 3 piece leather welders set up for sale in the store right now for $9.99, leather apron, welders gloves and rod holder, can't but the leather to make the apron for $9.99, picked one up today.

I cast in an open shed by my shop so have plenty of ventilation. I wear a sweat band with my grinding face shield and welding gloves and welding apron. I wear all this over a set heat clothes that I got from the steel mill where I work part time security. I pair of heavy work boots doesen't hurt to have on also.

Some would call me reckless, but I don't wear any safety gear. I wear glasses to see, but other than that, just my normal work-type clothes. Cotton is best. Synthetics will melt and stick to your skin along with the lead in the case of a spill.
One thing I do that most don't, is I cast standing up. This is so I can "Get outa Dodge" should something happen. I just can't imagine a lap-full of molten lead. I prefer my pants to be over the tops of my boots. Don't need to fill them suckers up in a spill either.
I've never had anything more than a splash or two in many years of casting. "Touch Wood"!

Safety Glasses, yes.  Ventilation, yes.
Denim jeans, but for the rest whatever I have on. Too many clothes and I get to sweating, drop one of those off your nose to the pot and it'll get your attention!
