I think that I would like to get a drop in 12/20 GA barrel to increase the use and for variety.
What/who would you suggest and where to find without breaking the piggy bank?

I "think" 3 Hawks is right, although things may have changed since I last dabbled in this possibility.
The barrels you are looking for are all full in 1 inch tubes. The .54 hawken barrel is 15/16ths across the flats and that puts the lock out-of-whack trying to install it on that platform.
Now, having said all that, I will say that one of the guys here, and I can't remember who, said he had managed to work around the problem and could do it.
I can't remember who it was, and I never saw the completed rifle.
And, after talking to Dick at Pecotinica Longrifles, I personally gave up on the idea.
Maybe he will come forward and help out a bit here....I believe it was Tom, but my ole rememberer just ain't up to snuff any more....seems it keeps getting over ridden by my forgetter.

I didn't realize the "typical" T/C Hawken came with a 1" barrel, although I do know that the big demand for the Renegade, and Big Boar (yep Boar, not Bore) was the absolute rage because it was recognized that this was the easy way to go for many drop in's.
What don't you call Green Mountain, or Pecotinica and ask them?

The T-C .45 and .50 barrels are 15/16" across the flats. Their larger caliber ones are 1". The Hawken and Renegade rifles use the same shape furniture except nose cap and butt plate. The Renegade was kept somewhat less expensive by using a less "developed" stock and a plastic buttplate and steel, rather than brass furniture.
"Hogging Out" a stock that's been inletted for a smaller barrel might work, but leaves the original barrel out in the wet. What'cha gonna do with it?
Shotgun, fowler and musket barrels are usually round, that's why I suggested having a drop in 1" barrel made octagon to round, that way no modifications need be done to the stock if the wedding band is put just past the nose cap. My point that the stock is still not the best shape for smoothbore work stands. Drop at comb and heel and length of pull on a T-C Hawken rifle aren't set up for wing shooting as a fowler is.

you can get a green mountain drop in barrel for your hawken in .62 smooth bore as it is a 1 inch oct not 15/16 send a pm to roundball he has all the specs for the tc hawken drop in barrels.the tc .54 is a 1 inch barrel

Gordon, The barrel I am taking off is a factory TC barrel, 1:48 twist. I am leaning toward making a tomato stake out of it. :-) It is in close to new condition but I hate the way it shoots and have zero use for it after putting on the new barrel. I would sell it pretty cheap, if you would like it. How about $50? Any takers. It has zero rust and has never been left uncleaned and unoiled inside or out.

.45 is about the minimum hunting caliber for some states, and I feel fairly confident that if the barrel is in as good shape as you say it is, someone, somewhere has a need for it and take it off your hands.

There was a time when having several barrels for a Hawken was a "stylish" thing...I know of one fellow who has an older T/C Hawken frame and 4 different caliber barrels that he changes off and on.....he had a .54, .50. .45. and that fancy deep rifled .40 for targets.
I have one now on the Trade Blanket with 3 barrels.
There ain't a thing in the world wrong with having several barrels of different calibers.

Yes they did make 56cal smoothbores for a short time. I have one but have not shot it yet. I'm thinking tree rats.
The information I found indicated that they made them for a short time when BP seasons were first being allowed and several east coast states limited BP guns to smoothbores for deer just like the modern guns. That got straightened out fairly quickly and TC stopped making the guns.
