What the best way to remove bluing from a barrel?
-
There are several methods and chemicals, but I have used Naval Jelly with excellent results.
-
I'll second the navy jelly. It took 95-98% of the bluing off on mine and gave the barrel a light aged patina look.
-
Birchwood Casey Blue and Rust Remover is another option.
It left a very light grey color after removing browning on a pistol barrel

FWIW - the BC stuff has phosphoric acid as it's active ingrediect - the same as Naval Jelly and the Naval Jelly is usually much cheaper.....Coke also has phosphric acid in it - the reason it will it the paint off your car if left too long!

thanks for the advise i got some naval jelly. Worked great now I can brown the barrel.
-
Plain old white vinegar will also remove the bluing, Don't ask how I learned this
-
I get some navel ...stuff, every time I check. How much do I need to collect to make this jelly, and what is the process?

There's a great deal of difference between "Navel" and "Naval". Details matter.

more information than I needed to know

Rinse the barrel with Liquid Drano. Takes it right off. Be sure you wear gloves, goggles, and catch the runoff in a plastic bucket.
