Title: Proper steps for finishing an in-the-white rifle gun
Post by: rickevans on March 09, 2010, 10:44:03 AM
I have my in-the-white squirrel rifle from Wyomingsmith. I don't want to screw this up (too much).
Here's how I think I sould proceed:
1) Remove all the metal parts and file, sand and polish them to finish.
2) While the metal is out, sand the stock to 400 grit, whet and raise the grain a few times, each time sand with 400 grit to remove the whiskers
3) Replace metal parts, sand/finish wood to metal fit.
4) Stain and seal stock
5) Brown metal
6) Re-assemble and start shootin' at things.

Will this get me from here to there?

IMHO the best person to answer is Wyomingsmith.  He knows exactly what needs to be done.

When you say the word "file" when speaking of an in-the-white rifle I get nervous.

I think you are on the right track but be careful how you use that file.

Great, thanks Steve. Would this stock benefit at all from using AquaFortis to bring out some of the grain?  If so, do I just use the 50-50 mix over it?

I will pick up some Laurel Mt. Browning and some Davis at the Kalamazoo show in a couple weeks.

Thanks. I do believe I will follow YOUR method and not mine.  {8^)>
