MY club is putting on a shoot in June. Every year at Lewis and Clark state park, Onawa, Ia. there is a Lewis and Clark Festival put on by the Friends of Discovery. A local gun club runs the shoot associated with it. The previous club has gone under, so we were asked to run the shoot.
Im looking for some ideas on primitive , period shooting matches. BUT targets will be strictly paper.
I need to come up with 8 events. Im thinking of using the Mike fink Target for one.
Im going to make up a paper target for the old splitting the ball event.
I also have a 1/2 bull target that im going to use.
I would like to stay away from the regulation modern paper targets if at all possible, we want to try to do this a little different than it has been the last 20 years. Any ideas please post them, if you have a target I can use, please email me at Smckown@linweld.com
Thanks

How about the split the playing card shot at 10-15 yrds.
-
We will probably do that also, but will do that for a quarter, or dollar shoot. But thanks, that reminds me I need to go get a deck of cards.

A diagonal string cut and a horizontal string cut . They help seperate the wheat from the chaff

Glue the bottom of a small paper cup to a paper plate.Shoot at 25 yds.you must hit the bottom of the cup without touching the sides. If you are restricted to paper you can image a candle in a computer scan, sketch in a small flame in a good solid visible color, must hit flame or wick not candle start at 10 to 15 yds.keep moving back until you get down to one shooter, the winner.Usually when we do this with lit candles competitors pay a buck to enter then you are allowed two buybacks,it usually ends up with a pretty good pot.Another fun deal is to get a bunch of ketchup packets like you use at a fast food joint staple them to a board at 25-50 yds.I prefer 50 yds I think it makes for more fun. When they are hit they make a large splat.Mustard packets will work too but you need to use some appropriate colored material backdrop to make them show well.

Pick up some of those individual packs of ketchup. Tape one just off center (each one in a slightly different location) with the white side up (they usually don't have printing on both sides) on a piece of white card stock. Each shooter gets one target. Absolutely no marking on the target. Step off 25 yds and let the fun begin. The first one to draw "blood" wins. You have to check closely after each round just in cases someone "wings" the target. Great Fun. Just ask Beav. :hey-hey :happy :happy

red spuds or charcoal briquet's tied to a string hanging down are fun. I've also seen eggs used as well, balanced on a stump.
ketchup packet idea sounds fun!
-
I like the ketchup idea also.
I forgot to mention, range is 25yds. This is on a state park, and they have a range set up, BUT unfortunately it is only 25 yds.
We do a candle shoot at night, at our club range, thats fun. Does anyone have a candle target? I have seen them. Also, does anyone have a "pipe" target, I have shot it once, 4 clay pipe shapes attached to a pillar(for lack of a better term. Pillar is no score, bowl is 1 point, stem is 3 points. Its a paper target. Someone would happen to have one of these?

tie a nail to a string
make the nail 'dance'
(to be HC, make it a wrought iron nail and hemp twine
)
works better with modern rifles like multiple-shot .22, of course, but first shot gets it moving and next shooter has to hit the swinging nail

Good idea. How about a poker chip? OK so if you don't want to pick up bits of plastic, how about shooting an Alkaseltzer tablet? They break up like lil teeny tiny clay pidgeons! When it rains they dissolve. IF it's raining though..., back to the poker chips.
OOOOH maybe you could get somebody to make you some ships biscuts or hardtack, just be careful about riccochets!

How about everyone who shoots a .32...hang life savers from a string and shoot through the hole???
No just kidding...

Hang a donut and shoot through the hole. Seriously!

How about NECCO wafers instead of poker chips ??? Could be more points for different colors ?

If you would like to do a candle shoot, but want to stick with paper targets, try this:
http://www.luckygunner.com/images/banne ... -color.pdf (http://www.luckygunner.com/images/banners/Targets/Targets-Sharpshooter-color.pdf)
They have other targets there, too. More fun ones at:

LD wrote, "Hang a donut and shoot through the hole..." LOL
The group that I shot with would hang us if we shot at a donut
stead of eating it.
-
You would never see them doing that at our local police shoots.

Hank,
I was in law enforcement and a firearms instructor.
LOL That's why I said what I did. 8)
