Bought a Lyman G.P.R 54cal in browned hardware. Did sight in today at a buds house. My question is, at 25-30yrds 60grs ffg did'nt seem like it had enough thump, jacked it up to 65grs and was tight groups in a 1-1 1/2 inch red bullseye, 3 of the shots all holes within each other, now for fun, jacked it up to 80grs and bam, nailed target right where I was putting the pumpkin on the tree with the sights, what would any of you put the charge at for target shootin? Stay with 65grs, go to 80grs, in between? (My .45 C.V.A does excellent with 45grs fffg at 25yrds up to 100yrds, that little Hawken is freaky accurate!)[/url]

I shoot 70gr for target in my 54 and 90 for huntn. Your going to love that GPR. It sounds like you and that rifle mak a good team.

My flinter likes 68 gr of 3f and the cap lock likes 60 ( both 54's)

I use 80 for targets and 100 if I go hunting  in both my 54 GPR's. Usually 2f although I have use Pyrodex with equally good results.

I use 50 FFF for target, and 80FFF for deer in my .54

In my .45 I was using max load when I started going to Rondy's and Multi Lakes Winter Woodswalk Shoot. A Gent there told me I was just wasting powder and killin my shoulder for nothing for target shoots. After I backed off I actually started hitting more to! Thats why I asked what y'all thought about this with my new(old) Lyman. Yes love this new rifle, esp the browned finish. I know the most favored is the Flinter long rifle, but I just have a passion for the Hawken style rifles. I guess time will probaly tell with the powder charge ratio's.

My Renegade in .54 likes 65gr'. fffg for targets and 95 gr. for hunting.

Iron Bull, glad you got out to shoot your new GPR. Sounds like it's shooting pretty good. I would try everything in between the 65 and 80grns, to see how it shoots. Try them all, Use a different target for each load, and mark all your info on that target. After your finished, lat all the targets on the table, step back, and see which one is best.

The GPR is a great rifle, and they shoot really good. Good job!
