OK everyone, we've seen photo's of everything you make or have made, now lets see your workshop! I'm going to be building my new workshop this spring, and I would like to see how you set your shops up. I'm not sure if this has ever been discussed here or not, but show us your shop!
-
Swamp, My current "shop" if you wanna call it that , is a 1 car garage circa 1959. Not really much to speak of. I would however, like to show my bench for gunwork. I got the plans from someone over at the ALR site. It took me 16 hrs to build and it is a STOUT design. Project #2 is on it now.(a restock) I really like it as I dont have to reach over the gun I am working on to grab other tools etc. A very practical design IMO.
( disregard the date in photo )
-
You really don't want to see my workshop Jeff!
-
My "shop" is currently a folding plastic table that I can move from the dining room to the living room depending what is on television that night...after I clean all the leather scraps and other stuff off of it that is.
-
well mine currently gutted and everything stacked over to one side of my 28X30 shop .
yesterday they started the fraiming of my new work room so nothing i can posta photo of but for a big mess . hopfuly this next week ill be running wiring , insulating , hanging sheetrock , or maybe log , i havent made up my mind on that yet . looks like im going to be down for a month or so
ill post photos when i get everything back into place
-
Jeff, I'll post some pics in a couple weeks, my shop has been my daughters warehouse for the last 6 months, she moves out on the 1st of April and then I'll be able to get back in there, one tip, everything you build for benches or machinery or whatever, LOCKING CASTERS!, everything in my shop is on wheels, makes life much simpler in the long run!
-
Are you sure you really want to see this mess?
Unfortunately, I can't blame anyone but myself.
As soon as the weather clears up a bit, spring gets here, and I get me one of those little "round-to-its", I am going to clean the mess, I may even have it nice enough to actually put a car, or a boat, in it...who knows?
Years ago I found a small niche in the Gunsmithing trade for building stocks....I've been doing it for around 40 plus years as a hobby and side line.
I've always heard that nice, clean, uncluttered shop was the sign of a cluttered mind.
If that should be true, then I suspect my old mind is as clear as fresh mountain water........... <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_eek.gif" alt="" title="Shocked" />
Here is a Renegade stock I did last fall for a friend. if you can see it for all the clutter.
Here is a picture of the very last checkering job I will likely ever try.....I'm trough with this. Just ain't got what it takes anymore.
I simply no longer have the hand, or the patience. It's kinda funny with checkering...I do pretty good until I lay a checkering tool inside the layout, and then my hand starts to shake, from there, it just gets progressively worse. Weird!!
21LPI is hard enough with good eyes, and a steady hand. Captchee and a few others can do 21, and I have, on one occasion, even did a 26 which I was almighty proud of.
I sold my Brownells checkering cradle, and this last stock I did was a totally unsupported, free hand, checkering job....NEVER AGAIN!!
This is a modern stock, that I originally built the gun for somewhere around 30 or 35 years ago...the stock didn't turn out too bad, but it convinced me that it's time to hang it up and clean up the shop!
This is my "Browning Box"....3# coffee can in the bottom, filled with water and a sponge, and a 100W light bulb in the top to keep the heat up when the box is close.

I thought you quit checkering!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I would however, like to show my bench for gunwork. I got the plans..........
That looks really heavy duty.......would you still have the plans to share?
-
I thought you quit checkering!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have! I definitely have...... should've stayed quit once I sold my cradle, that was the intent.
No more slick talkin for that "one more job"...it's a done deal now, over, gone.
It's a young man's game, and it can be very rewarding in terms of satisfaction.
I like that bench, and it does look Heavy Duty!

trois, I'll look and get back with ya soon.
shoulda stated, I'm at work and I'll have to look at home on my pc after work.
-
Thanks
-
Well, this has been interesting so far!
I like the few I see so far. Will be looking forward to seeing more. Thanks!
-
I was about to post some pics of my shop, but I can't seem to figur out how in this new site.
I think I'll wait till they do the photo gallery work this weekend.
-
2locks, its actually easier than it was as there is a browser button available while you are writing yer response to thread.
But I only know one way of doing it
lol
-
Trois, I pm ya
-
Thanks Ridj, that looks easier. You will be able to judge how "easy" it was for me from the time difference between this post & the next one.
Probably a better way to post pics in this case - I don't think my shop really needs to be in the photo gallery.
-
OK this is my shop facing west:

And here's the view facing back toward civilization:
DSC_0190.JPG[/attachment:3u6js3vn]
The silver thing on the floor is my smoker - I only mention that cuz I'm getting grease on the keyboard while I'm typin' & etin' smoked pheasant at the same time.
And here is a makeshift basement shop where I clean guns & do other non dusty/stinky projects in the winter. (It's 12 degrees in the garage shop this fine "Spring" morning.)

Gonna try this again. This is my leather area
This is my gun area. Wife say's I'm a "hoarder",but when somthing needs fixin' or makin',guess who EVERYONE comes to!
This is in a 2-1/2 car garage that the previous owner built airplanes in! We are @ 1/2 mile from the Delta county airport and we often wondered why the railing on the back porch was made out of 3" tubing. Mr. Olsen would tie the plane to the railing to run up the engine before towing it to the airport! What a cool guy he must have been!
Swamp, good luck with your shop. After helping you set up our booth at Kalamazoo, you'll NEVER get to do anything in it. You'll be to busy ORGINIZING!!!!!!!!! :hairy
-
Hey, that must be some tuff leather your working to have to cut it with a Stihl! :shake
-

That Luhr Jensen Little Chief has been a mainstay for many folks over the years...I think my first one may have cost all of $15.
Nowadays you can't get a pan, or a replacement element for that price.
2-Locks...I see you got that nice stuff on the floor. The stuff that makes your feet smile, after standing all day.
I have been saying for the past four or five years I was going to put that stuff down but I haven't got me one of them "round-to-its" yet, and a fella has gotta have "round-to-its" to ever get anything done.
Pathfinder even has "designated" areas...leather area, gun area. I do like that.
I have plans of adding another shed out back next year. One of those fancy pre-fab 10x12...I can get one locally at "Ziggy's" for under $2,000 installed / set-up (on my own foundation) and wired. That should take care of some of the overflow. Then maybe I could get me a fancy bench like Dan has.

Swamp,I'm using the Stihl to "fine tune" your barrel!

Swamp,I'm using the Stihl to "fine tune" your barrel!
That's what I had to use to cut the buffler for his new pouch!
-
Now that's what I like to hear, PRECISION! :rotf
But in the end, I know I'll be the proud owner of a beautiful Southern Mountain Rifle from Path, and a shooting bag that you all will be droolin over from Beav! I can't wait to showcase these right here on the TMA forum. Bib's anyone??????
-
well my shop is getting close . i was able today to move a few things back in . . all thats really left is finish work and to hang the stairs .
sure is going to be nice to have more then 2 plugins . a dedicated engraving bench .

Lookin great Capt!
I like it! Are you going to do the entire shop with the log siding? That would make a great look!
-
Wow Charlie, you aint a kiddin! The only thing I recognize is yer railing and stairs goin into the house! Very nice.
-
Na the log is only for the peaks swamp . and maybe a stair rail . im not sure yet but i may have to put a half wall up in the loft, so if i end up doing that , then it will have logs as well .
ya dan , its a big change , no more running an extension cord from here , to there , then back over there . I put in a total of 22 plugging between the shop and in my gun shop . 9 more lights .
Thanks to the fellas help here on the forum , I now also have heat YA!!!!!!!. No more freezing in the winter and cooking under a steal roof in the summer
My contractor who framed it up for me , still has to come back and cut out the AC and pull the steal of the roof , run paper and then put the steal back on , he will also be adding a vented roof cap so that the snot wont blow in anymore.
i still have some joiners to put up on the ceiling and trim around the windows . not to mention a whole lot of shelving and gun racks .
do all the cocking and such .
im also going to put my mill ,metal lathe , wood lathe , press , foundry and the polisher and grinder all out in the other part of the shop .out in the other part of the shop so I can better keep things clean .
you know its just amazing how much stuff a fella piles up . seriously , right now the rest of the shop is shoulder high with crap .
im going to have to have a yard sale or a whole lot of trips to the dump
-
Charlie, let us know when the sale is (or at least the directions to your dump)!
-
LOL Riley .
you know its funny . while clearing things out , i found so much stuff that i had forgotten i had .
other stuff i was wondering what the 7734 i was thinking .
i came acros 10 CVA and traditions plastic stock ?? why i kept them is beyond me .
i also found new un finished forestocks for 2 piece Kentucky rifles .. I also found another full in the white ,2 piece stock . Im thinking it was for an early CVA . But it has a cheek piece and its for a 1 inch barrel . I have no idea where that came from .
A friend of mine came over and packed off 2 big fruit boxes of just odds and ends of maple , English walnut , Caro , purple hart , black walnut ,Coca ,zebra wood , Australian Cyprus, cherry ……..
I have to get out of the habit of thinking . HA, I can use that for something , some day ..
I also found a down rigger for my boat that I no longer have . Not to mention a full set of old paper type deep sea fish finders with all the sender . ???? Why ????/ you got me .
Im also thinking I must be as hooked on fishing poles as I am on muzzleloaders . For crying out loud I bet I have 20+. But I guess I guy cant have to many fishing poles .
I also ran across an original hand mad White metal detector still in the wood boxes and still having all the old paper boxed batteries. Where that came from ??????????
For all the complaining I used to do about my dad saving all the crap he did . It sure seems I been doing the very same thing
-

Hey Cap, the nut doesn't fall far from the tree buddy!, it's genetic! except i get my pack rat obsession from Mom!, she musta had a higher level or testosterone than most women!, what kind of downrigger is that? I may need it!
-
what kind of downrigger is that? I may need it!
im not sure of the brand Jim , but its a transom or gunnels mounted hand crank rig that sets into a heavy tube like a rod holder .. Ill have to look but I seem to recall that along with the mess of tackle I have , is also a few releases , divers and planes .
Heck I even have ½ a dozen un opened paper tapes for the fish finders
At one time we had a 28 ft Boston whaler we ran 3 of the big paper finders on it and 4 down riggers
When I get back over into that area of the shop ,
ill send you a photo

Here's a recent adition to my shop. I shoot a lot and cleaning 3-4 guns at a time suck's,so I made this contraption to make it a little easier. It's made from 1X12's and along the top edge I put in 8/32 threaded brass inserts to hold the different jags and stuff,a shelf to hold the cleaning solution,(simple green for now,I'll change again, depends on my mood)patches, and lube(bear grease for now).
-
very cool pathfinder .
mine would never look that nice
-
A clean workshop, like a clean desk, is a sure sign of a sick and twisted mind.
Three Hawks,
Whose workshop actually does have a floor, else how would all that debris not fall to the center of the Earth?
-
This is my play room

:happy
Ya better get over here before the bite goes off on these Walleye!
