Post by: rickevans on April 26, 2011, 09:22:49 PM
I want to stain the stock on my fusil a very dark color, almost black. What will give me that dark, dark, dark almost black stain? Vinegar and Iron?

A good dose of Aqua Fortis followed by a lot of dangler dark brown stain should do it.

Road Tar.I asked a old timer how his stocks was so dark.He puts road tar in a sealed large mouth bottle and fills it up with kerasine.
Shakes it every week and uses a nylon to strain it as it desolves until he has a bottle full.
The more coats that is applied the darker it is.He then seals it with a clear coat of true oil then dulls it down with 0000 steel wool.
The fore arm and wrist is left lighter to make it look worn.  Wm.Hammond

The above application was the use of asphalium as a dye .
I actually have use roofing tar to achieve the same thing. The problem though is that  it never truly dries  completely  and some finishes will not bind properly ..
I also have used tobacco tar as a stain base  . This works well but on light woods it often creates a dark brown color not a true black .
