Title: Betty Lamp Anyone using in thier camp?
Post by: Fort Greene Ville on August 29, 2011, 09:10:12 PM
Is anyone using a Betty Lamp in your Trekking camp?    If so , what are you using for fuel and how are you transporting that fuel?

I just love the look of these lamps and they pack smartly, but I'm missing it on the fuel so I'm taking suggestions for reasearch.

Thanks in advance :bl th up

When I use to pack light for treking, my main source of lighting was my Betty Lamp. The source of fuel was the grease left from the frying pan. The lamps reservoir help enough grease to last a night or two before being refilled  from the cook pan. The grease solidifies when it cools and the lamp can be packed wrapped in a cloth. It you use a lamp wick or cotton clothesline rope it gives off more light than a candle.

Funny thing they don't let one use a Betty Lamp in the places that I go, as it uses "flammable oil", and the fact that it will work off of fat is not an exception.  I think it's due to there always being one sod who will omit the use of fat, and actually use kero or lamp oil, and torch a tent, in every crowd.  They don't like wooden candle lanterns either.  YET they will allow me to use a ceramic cup, and a twig wrapped in linen, with some bacon grease to make a candle for use in camp, but no Betty Lamps.

I hate rules that penalize the majority for the stupidity of a few. I've use Betty lamps and wooden candle lanterns for 35 years and I haven't singed a hair on my body....yet

You can just use a dollop of Crisco, yes?

I think a Betty Lamp would be safer than a Hippie Killer, (that's what Jim Shockey calls a whisperlite gas stove).  :lol sign
