Title: Front sights on Smoothbores/Fusils/Muskets
Post by: rickevans on August 22, 2012, 09:00:33 AM
I would like to replace the plain ol' steel post on a couple of my long guns. My French 1748 Redoux project for one. I want a nice shiney brass turtle up front to replace a small, oddly shaped piece of scrap steel that is there now. What is the proper method to attach said brass turtle to the steel barrel?

My Fusil has a steel turtle front sight that I'd also like to replace with a similar shiney brass turtle.

First the Redoux, then the fusil.

That's easy enough.

Make darn sure you re-oil the inside of your barrel.

Make sure you don't use so much heat that the front barrel tennon lets loose! Not that I have any experience with this type of disaster.  :(

Thanks Greyhunter. I am sure, like me, that someone told you about this, not that you have actual experience....

I'll wrap a damp rag around the bbl further up (down) from the sight to be soldered.
