There once was a bobcat ,,, no , no , no
There once was a poor little rifle made by CVA ??? Ok we'll go with that
UHMMM,,,, no mater where she went folks shunned her plastic stock and ugly shape .
At the traditional gun shows , even though she was born as a side lock , some would invariably say ; Put! That away , or You cant sell that here .
Then one day a little lady came by , picked her up and against her husbands comments of , "you don’t want that " and " what do you want that for" , she was bought for a song ..
But still there was no peace for the little rifle . In the gun cabinet there was talk . The SXS would point and whisper. The cartridge rifles turned their scopes , no where did she fit .
then one night the ladies husband came to get all the rifles for a big doins that was coming up . When the nice lady reached for the little bobcat her husband exclaimed . YOU CANT BRING THAT!!! And the door slammed shut .
The poor little rifle sat all alone to one side of the cold cabinet, hearing only the whispers of the foul mouthed modern guns who were also left behind.
Suddenly the door open , the big hands of husband reached in . He grabbed the little rifle and threw her in a blanket , wrapped it up tight . Surly this must be it, though the bobcat as she felt the THUNK of being tossed
There was no air , the little rifle couldnt see . Things were falling and bouncing all around for hours , days it seemed . Finally all was still for some time . then movement, light , trees , a river ,,AIR!!!!.
Finaly thought the little rifle I will prove my worth. She would let No one out shine her at the range . On this day, the little lady who was her owner ,would stand front of all .
then suddenly she realized that the one whos hands she was in wasn’t the lady .but those of the big man of a husband and to the river he was heading .
The mans grip was tight on the little rifles barrel . down the trail he went. with each "SMAK" of her stock hitting a tree the little rifle lost hope .
they suddenly stopped in front of an Indian lodge.the little rifle had heard the other rifles talk of these before but she never thought she would see one for real . Out front of the lodge sat two women and a mountain man . .
Is Two feathers around asked the man holding the little rifle . One of the women got up came over .No she said ,he is out shooting ,can I help you ?
Please have him See if he can do something with this ,will ya ,,exclaimed the big man handing the little rifle to the strange woman . then turning and walking away .
In side the lodge the rifle went and once again the lights went out .
Time passes .
As we all know the strange times of youth are gradually replace with the knowledge of experience . Our braces are removed to show strait teeth . The awkwardness of the teen years are replaced by the lines of a fine woman or the streaght of a young man . Our names change from Mikey , Bobbie, Charlie . To Mike , Bob and Chuck .
So is the way of it and so is the story of this lonely little rifle .
Now all that’s left is for her to take her place back amoung the rifles of the gun cabinet she new long ago .
Returning to the lady who saved her . Proud , Strong , a force to be reckoned with on the range .
the shape of a lady strong of will and with lines of knowlage . never again to hang her head .
So ends our little story and the time this rifle has spent with me .
my hope is that long after i am gone the story of this little common rifle who is not so common any more will live on
We now need a name fitting of her French lines
A name fitting of her mother the Countess Tulle De Chasse .
Some say “Loup Cervier” others say “Chat de Pomb”
what say you ?
signed
Charlie two feathers .

By golly, that little lady don't need to hang her head anymore,.... does she!! :hey-hey
...... and, she's got a real nice story to go with her!! :bl th up
-
Pretty nice looking piece, Captchee. I have always liked the reddish cherry look.
Regards, sse
-
SWWWWWWWEEEEEEETTT!!!! I like the way you did the wood relief and but plate.
-
....there once was an ugly duckling that turned into a beautiful swan!!!!.....that story fits too. That is really a beautiful piece. Hopefully it moved up a space or two in front of those back-stabbing cartridge guns!
-
looks like the countess is ready for the ball!
-
Captchee....Absolutely great!
I prefer the name.....“Chat de Pomb”. (Although someone else had to tell me what it meant.)
Personally, I think that is a very befitting name for such a nice piece.
(I also noticed you have the gold bound version of Ned Roberts book.)

i guess i should have posted the meaning hu ? LMAO
ok this is what i have been told by a couple of our members
first from fletcher was
The French word for Lynx is 'loup cervier' and since that is a bigger - meaner cat
then we had graywolf that had this to say
while the term loup cervier is used to denote the lynx it's direct translation is "wolf deer".
If one takes a direct translation of the two words bob + cat - you get "chat de plomb" (chat is pronounced kat) - either one sounds good............

Yes I agree. One of the best things I like about this Mountain Man ambiance is the stories that go with the people, the gear and the places they go.
It is good to bring them TTT 'to the top' now and again for those of us who are new and those of us who forget.
-
I was impressed with with Capt`s story too. Your a true credit to this sport Capt. The rifle speakes for itself.

MAN!! Has it been 3 years ?
Again I want to thank you all for the kind words .
The lady who owns her , still has her . Im am proud to say I have been told the little rifle has schooled the ladies husband at the range , more then a few times .
3 years ?? Boy have we come along way fellas .
I actually look back at this post with both joy and sadness . I see people that we now longer hear from .
Firewalker , Jack S I wonder where they are today ?
Long knife is no longer with us , now sitting im sure by the camp fires of the elders , hopefully smiling down on us and the organization he helped form .
I think we who knew him miss him greatly . A true Man and friend , in every since of the word .
I also see all the others that are still here , Uncle Russ , Riley , Eric . Beaverman , Voyager , Rolling B .
I even see Thumper now and then. in fact still speak with him often though we don’t get to shoot together as much as we once did .
Now we have a new person Burch .
Burch , thank you for your words and welcome to the TMA forum . I hope we can bring you , much joy and knowledge and the friendship that we all share
.
I also whant to thank you for bringing this forward . While I had not forgotten about doing the rifle , I had forgotten about the story .
I would have to say that even after this long of time I still believe the stories base to be true .
I think to often we forget that what we see on the outside may not be what’s in the inside .
Possibly in this day and age of the internet , computer games and basically a way of life that takes our children way from the out doors , stifling their imaginations to the point that if they cant physically see something, they cant see it in their mind . I don’t know , I guess it saddens me alittle bit . Thus as I recall back 3 years ago. That , was I think the reason behind why I wrote that story .
Its just so easy anymore to read words on a page and not realize that behind those words , thoughts deeds , is a real living breathing person , just wanting to be heard or maybe show off their skills and in some way be recognized and accepted . Im of the opinion , when we do that , we all grow .
I think Longknife is proud of this organization because we have held true to that reasoning .
So again folks , thank you for the kind words and lets not forget that , that old rifle or pistol in the back of our closet , hold memories as well and can provide us with many , many more if we just give it the chance
Be safe

I just came home from shooting my GPR. Man, how I miss doing that. I gave up BP shooting for a while taken in by modern firearms and the reloading game. Although I still like doing that I accually loved my BP guns at one time and i`m finding how much this sport is modernizing itself with the in-line crowd ( no offense meant ). The lore of traditional weapons is one of the best things i`ve found yet. I also shoot my stick bows and can`t help but favor the traditional side of things. It`s people like Captchee that keep this alive and keep it from dying out. So my hats off to the fine folks in this `ole world that still believe in the way it should be rather than the way it is. Oh, by the way my GPR still hits dead center at 50 yrds.
I think i`ll start spending a little more time with my past.

I just happen to have a similar bobcat.
OPne thing is though mine has a silver finish - may have seen or heard the name silver egal or something like that.
Any way want to restock.
Can I blue over the silver finish an if so how would I go about it?
-
I've seen and owned several CVA Bobcats but never came across one in stainless or silver finish. Can you read the information on the breach of the barrel? Several of the cheap (inexpensive) rifles that CVA used to sell used the smae locks and barrels as the Bobcat but put on a different stock. Can you post a photo of it?? You've got my curiousity up. CVA also would stick a medellion in the stock and sell it as a Prmotion for National wild turkey federation, or Elk federation etc.Asmall amount of the sale price going to these orgs.
-
It is not SS. It does have a silver finish and seems to be textured and not smooth. I'll check the info when I get home.
I do know that it does not have any medalions on it any where.
Can't post a picture of it.
-
MMMMM? this would be a new one for me as well , . is there any chance it was a kit and the barrel was left in the white ?
if you get a chance photo's please
-
Captchee I think CVA offered a mat finish on a few of their guns but I don't recall it being offered on the bobcat. I'm wondering if this may be somthing put together from different parts?
-
not sure gorden . i have seen bobcats with larger locks and gold lettering so ?? maybe it was an option or a limited run ?
-
I guess that I miss spoke.
It is what I consider of a bob cat type.
I looked and it is actually according to what is on the barrel a:
Silver Eagle, .50 cal.
Stone Mt Inc.
Maid in Spain
Black Powder Only.
It has a synthetic stock and a textured finish on the silver finish barrel.
I do not have any way of posting photos.
I am still woundering if the silver finish may be smoothed down and cold or hot blued?
I am not fond of the synthetic stock nor the silver testured finish.
Any help or suggestions?
-
MMM? should be able to strip it ? depends on thatw the finish is
-
Sure had me wondering for a while. I didn't think CVA offered the bobcat in the matt finish but you never can be certain.
-
well Im thinking it is a bobcat . they just changed the name when they provided it in a silver satin finish
(http://www.gunsamerica.com/userimages/4786/943421669/pop_wm_1188629.jpg)
doesnt say if its plated or powder coated ?????. but with some work it should all come off and be able to be blued or browned
-
That is it just as pictured.
