Title: PEEP SIGHT
Post by: cyotewa on December 26, 2014, 02:28:43 PM
I'm going to put a peep sight on my Lyman Great Plains 54 and I'm trying to decide if I should use a Lyman 57GPR tang mount or put a Williams on the barrel. My concern with the 57GPR is repeating after barrel removal for cleaning and it looks like it sits back far enough to bother thumb while shooting. Anyone have experience with this.

Lyman all the way, you will have to be a national competition shooter to find a difference as you asked. Talking 1/8 inch at 50 yards

Have you shot one, the tang mount seems to be in the grip area of your thumb.

This is my 50 cal GPR with the Lyman sights (peep rear and globe front).  I have no problem with that sight being in the way of my thumb or anything else.  I purchased a set of inserts from Brownells that I like much better than the ones that come with the Lyman sights.  I hunt with this rifle and compete in matches that allow those type of sights.

I did glass bed the tang and barrel and I never remove the barrel from the stock.  Ever.  It gets cleaned with a flush nipple and plastic tubing, good brushes etc.

I have other rifles with primitive sights for matches that call for them and rendezvous shoots. But this is the rifle I prefer to hunt with.  Its reliable and those sights are kind to my old eye sight.

Hope this helps answer your question.

THANKS! That's exactly what I wanted to know.
My target rifle is a 12 lb underhammer and over the last several years its groups went from a ragged hole to a cloverleaf  to the holes not touching. I put a barrel mount Williams peep on it and its back to shooting a ragged hole. My GPR never shot a ragged hole but I'm hoping it will go back to shooting a cloverleaf.
Thanks again

I got a lyman 57GPR peep and new front sight from 'Optics Planet' today. Now all I have to do is drill & tap a hole in the tang and start burning powder in it.

You could use any front sight you like.  I like the globe sight with inserts.  It lets me choose an insert that best suits the target and conditions.

When deer hunting I use a wide post insert.  I use electrical tape to attach a fishing bobber light to the barrel to light that front sight.  I also remove the aperture from the rear sight and sight through the larger opening.  It may not be historically correct but It helps me see the sights in low light for early and late in the day.  I prefer the green light over the red.  This is precise enough for deer killing.

When I need pinpoint accuracy I instal a finer insert and the smallest aperture.  It is a very versatile sight system.  Peep sights can be just as precise as a scope.  The magnification of the target is the only advantage I see with using a scope.

I think I'll Try with the frunt sight that is on it now.I do like the idea of the bobber light and will give that a try. Thanks!
