Title: Hawken #5 build
Post by: MountainDevil on February 04, 2015, 09:55:20 PM
I got the bores (50-54combo) cleaned up and fitted the barrels to the tang. Now the tang and barrel and setting up in JB weld until the morning. Also fit the nose cap and trigger guard to the stock. Just had to drill holes for them is all, but its slowly coming tomorrow. Now if some darn parts would arrive!

Best part of this St.Louis Hawken is the fact shes a SLOW twist!!

Also came with the original box and the warranty/how to build, manual.

CVA St.Louis Hawken with combo .50cal - .54cal 1:66 slow twist barrels! Bores are perfect inside and out. They will get browned. I have an assortment of new parts I am adding on, along with a new stain and finish to try out. I'll put her to bed tonight and let her set up and tomorrow, Break the barrel and tang loose and see how she came out.

Its super nice handling too with that thinner 15/16" barrel. The previous Hawken rifles I had were the thick 1" barrel and man those were like tanks. This will be a great hunting rifle with weight/balance.

Got the DGW order in, along with the incorrect ramrod I accidentally picked out, no biggy, I will find a use for it down the road.

Progress is going awesome! I am finding myself actually humming as I file and sand. For some reason  this one just feels special and enjoyable to work on.  The JB Weld bedding job came out great, a nice rock solid bed for the tang and barrel to sit in.

Some more progress. The cheek piece is always the worse part and thats when the whistling and humming turns to swearing LOL. My horse file took it down quickly but I had to swap over to  a wooden dowel with 100grit sand paper around it to get it nice and smooth. Still have plenty of sanding to do in that area but I like to knock down the slow depressing stuff first and then move on LOL.

I came across one of these kits locally a couple weeks ago and am impressed.  This one I don't know if it was a kit or not, but I am thinking not a kit since all the wood work looks like yours prior to fitting nose cap, butt plate, etc..  I had to use HVAC foil tape to bed the lock and tang for optimum fit & clearances which has worked pretty good for me in the past.  I am going to shoot this one before I do anything further.  The 50 barrel almost appears unshot and is kind of browned look similar to a BC plum brown finish, but I think it is really just patina from sitting in a closet - the grooves in barrel and inside of drum below nipple are still shiny which makes me think unshot - the 54 barrel has been shot but not much and someone did a good job of barrel cleaning, but it amazes me why no one ever cleanes around nipple - just a little minor pitting there that would disappear if I browned with Laurel Mtn Forge.  If you got any other pics of your progress I would be interested in them so I can learn.  THANKS
