Building a bunch of new rifle pouches in different styles, looking to find what side the majority of you shooters wear your bag and why, Thanks, BEAV
-
I wear mine on the right. I'm right handed and hanging it on the left just doesn't feel right. I can find the items either way by feel, but the right side feels better.
-
Right handed but wear it on the left. Why? Just because I always have.
-
Wear my bag on the left.
I'm right handed, and I wear my powder horn on the right for better control when pouring powder into the small charger, which I carry and retrive from the bag with my left hand.
I couldn't pour water out of a bucket with my left hand...:

I am right handed and wear mine on the right with my powder horn. This was the way I started doing it and I've never tried anyother way... To me it feels right, and like others have said, I can feel around in it and bring out whatever I would need...
I must admit, I did not know there was a right and left hand bag, I just thought they were all "universal", so I have learned something!
-
I wear mine on the right side but have worn on the left I just think it feels better on the right with my horn. I also wear another bag on the left with fire start and this and thats.
-
I wear mine on the right...I am right handed. Seems to me, a left handed person would wear thiers on the left. I dunno..probably comes down to a matter of choice. I carry my powder horn on the right also..on its own "cord" of woven latigo leather strips. The only thing I do carry on my left side is my throwing knife..or hunting knife...or bowie knife as the situation warrants.
-
I'm right handed (and I guess, wrong minded) . I wear both my bag & horn on my right side. seems easier ( that's the key for me ) to reach for stuff with my right hand. I wear a possibles bag on my left side when it's needed.

I wear my shoot'n bag and horn on my right side, and my haversack on my left,.... keeps me "balanced"!!
-
I'm right handed and wear my bag and horn on the right. I carry my pistol on the left in a cross-draw holster.
-
i wear mine to the left even though i am right handed.thanks..................eric
-
I wear mine on the left as I'm left handed . . . but I shoot right handed (right eye dominate).
-
Although I'm right handed and luggin me horn and bag on the left side would make sence ;)

JOE, I add a short starter/ pistol ram rod loop on the side of my bags between the back panel and gusset, also a buckle on the strap, the buckle is on the shorter end of the strap, if you buy a left handed bag and wear it on the right , the buckle winds up on the front of the and the short strater loop on the back, now you can cut the loop off if desired , the buckle is not a big deal to some people, but to me its in the way and it can possibly scratch the stock on you most precious smokepole! I add the buckle and extra long straps when I make then for adjustment for some of us more rounded out fellas and for adjustment when layering for winter! buy the way Im right handed and wear my pouch on the left.
-
I'm right-handed, and wear my bag and horn on the left, so it doesn't interfere with me carrying my gun on the right.
-
I wear my shooting bag and powder horn on right side, I'm right handed. My haversack is on the left side. Hey Beaverman, I hope you post some pictures of your finished bags. I have used your large shot pouch and I am interested in more of your stuff.
-
I'm right handed. I wear bag and horn on right side. It works better for me that way. I wear round ball bag and my knife on the left.
-
On the right....right handed. I started wearing it there because of the old saying "Right makes might!"...and I need all the help I can get!!!!!!!
Really, I pour my powder in the measure (held in my left hand) with my right hand, cut my patch with my knife in my right hand etc...it just seemed more natural flowing to wear my bag on the right
-
I'm left handed and wear my bag on my left and horn on my right (it kept banging on my rifle when carried it on the left).

I'm right handed, but carry my bag on the left and horn(s) on the right. I have the spout stopper made with the charger built into them.that way i don't have to fish it out of the bag. I also carry a small loading block with patched round balls on the right. This set-up ,makes for easy and rapid reloading without going to the pouch. It also keeps the rifle path clear.I carry my hunting/patch knife over my right hip when cutting patches at the muzzle, there's no bag to interfere with reaching the knife.
-
Basically it is because of the persona I've selected. The 95th wore their cartridge boxes and ball bags on the right side so that is where I wear all my shooting bags.
-
on the right with my horn . this way i don’t fumble when reaching for either my priming horn or led or what ever I may be reaching for .
On my left I have either my haversack or bead roll .
Also because im right handed my left side is my lead side when shooting . Having my shoot bag on my right gets it completely out of the way when firing .while keeping my right hand free to load or grab me hawk to fend off them pesky, theivin militia or squatting farmers
-
Wear it on the right, with my horn.I also carry a haversack on the rt. rear & a knife + a hatchet. How do I balance it ?? A pistol & some times a hunting sword.
In 1812 uni a Baker sword bayonett or Scots broad sword, & a pistol on the left.
Do I walk funny ?? yup. But then it works for me

I wear my bag on the right so the shoulder strap does not get in the way of the rifle butt. I can't believe nobody else said that already!
I have my patch knife and short starter in little pouches on the strap. I hang my horn, measure and capper, and ball bag on leather thongs around my neck. I jingle and jangle like an ol plow mule, but everything is fast and handy that way.
When it is Fort Shoot time, I replace the ball bag with speed blocks and change the adjustable spout measure to a fixed open measure.
Like Red Green, it ain't very handsome but it is Handy!

I wear my bag and horn on the left side.
I am right handed.
As has been said before, it does keep the rifle and bag/horn from getting together. Also, i see it as a possible safety advantage, keeping the powder container as far as possible away from the flash of ignition. Especially important for folks that tie the stopper onto the horn and forget to put it back into the horn spout when loading. Just let 'er dangle!!!
I notice that October Country builds all their pouches standard left side carry. That's interesting. I also noticed that the fleece bag that Cabela's offers is set up for left hand carry. Hmmmmm. Thinking back on other pouches, I think the Thompson Center bag was universal as was the Uncle Mikes. I think they both used a three piece strap.
Well, who knows? I think any way one does it is right.
Beaverman, why not build the bags so they hang from rings and rivet the straps on when they are sold, as the customer wants them. It's a thought. And it makes for a bag that hangs well, too. That way you could get the pouches sewn up ahead of time and determine carry side when sold. RE: the short starter loop on the side, it's no big deal to put one on each side of the pouch. Make it a lot more universal. Course, what do I know?

:rotf what do you know!!!!!! you a funny man! great idea smoke, think ill have to do that on the next ones i finish , have 5 diff cut out , holed and ready to stitch, guess im off to the harfware store for some brass rings!
-
One of the pouches I have has just that. When I got it itwas set for rt side carry and I just opened the brass rings and swapped the strap.

Being right handed I carry everything, but my knife on the left
side or slung around my back on the left side....For the most part my right side is clear of most accoustements. While in the hunting
mode I may not carry anything but my gun, knife and shooting
bag(on left side).

I'm a righty. Wear it on the right. Easier to access while holding the rifle in the left or tucked under arm. Carry my rifle in the right (like a spear), otherwise cradled in crook of my left, so bag is always out of the way off my right hip.
-
I'm right handed. I wear my shooting bag on the right with the horn above it, under my elbow. My haversack hangs high on the left, but easy to get into. I can use my elbows to help control any movement of the gear. I hold my rifle in the crook of my left arm, while handling the horn and accessories while reloading. While in the field, I keep a ball block ready, so all I have to do is pour a charge from the horn, load from the block, then wipe the pan and flint, prime and I'm ready to fire again. Takes longer to say it than do it.
-
Right side- Right handed....
-
Righthanded.........Shootin' bag on the right......Cause I don't know no better.
-
Wear my shooting bag on the right-side... now shoot right handed. Alot easier for me with messed up left wrist... I have a big possibles bag I carry on the left which I usually take off... once I get set.
Used to look at different pictures and try to figure out why they carried shootin' bags on the left... Still up in the air which side I want to carry my leather flask.
-
on right. easier for me to reach since I'm right handed.
-
I'm left handed so I wear my shooting pouch and horn on my left side and haversack on the right.

All this time I thought you was Bear Claw. Well, I guess you just blew that idea out of the water.

He's just trying to fool ya Riley, look close, you can see it was done with mirrors..
-
Right handed...shooting bag (and horn) on the right..knife on the left, bullet block and powder measure hanging from the pouch strap..fairly high for convience.

Didn't sink deep enough in the snow....saw it, right off
-
I'm right handed and carrymy horn and bag on the right side.
I think it was programmed into me when I was a militia man using the manual of arms loading my Brown Bess musket and all. Shootin a rifle just seems naturally follows the same procedure (sort of) that you hold the rifle in your left hand across your body while you fuss with the priming and lock and such. Couldn't do it any other way.
-
I'm right handed and wear my shootin' bag and horn on my left side...
Why...??? Well, I'm used to reachin' for a sword on my left side and seemed natural to reach that direction for things.
Also, I prefer to hold my powder measure in my right and pour with the left.
<shrug> go figure...

I don't have a horn or bag,so I must be in the middle.I do have a very nice horn and bag coming. And this will be hanging on my left-side and I'll be off the fence.
-
I wear mine on the right and am right handed.
Always seemed the easiest for me to work from and wasn't "in the way" when loading.
My patch knife which is high on the strap is more convenient, powder measure easier to fill and so on as I work predominantly with my right hand while my rifle/fusil is on the left side
By the way my powder horn I use most and is attached to my bag strap is a left hand horn so go figure!!
Guess I am a wee bit mixed up!!
-
Well I shoot left handed, so my bag is on the left as well. Just seems easier for me to load and all. Would like to get a left handed bag in the future, didn't see any while I was shopping for one.
-
Wear my possibles bag on the left (I'm a righty). Powder horn with antler powder measure attached , on the right, ball board and pan charger around my neck. Anything I need for a second shot is at hand and not in the bag. When I need a haversack it is under the horn on the right, faster retreive of trail snacks.
-
I'm right handed and carry bag and horn on left. just feels right.
-
1/2 a bottle of Champaign latter and after not reading all of the 4 pages of posts on this topic I'll ask the obvious question. I'm sure that during the time, bags and horns were worn in as many variations as we can come up with today. It is however, interesting the reasoning behind each person's choice.
Keep those cards and letters coming. :shake
-
I'm right handed and wear my shooting pouch and horn on the left, high enough to clamp under my elbow when moving quickly. I have a much easier time filling my measure without spilling as well.
I too, worry about sparks when I see someone, especially a flinter carrying his horn on the same side he shoots from. I think Range Safety Officers, or anyone for that matter who sees a shooter shooting while his horn is unplugged should say something to the shooter. Same-o same-o loading directly from the horn.

I am a left hander, who shoots right handed, carries his bag on the right and powder his horn on the left. Being a lefty in a right hander's world, I find I am more proficient when I use both hands for different tasks.
Left hander's are the only one's in their right minds.
