I now have a bag of blunt edge flints , it is about time
I learn how to knap flints .
Any suggestion ?
-
put the hammer at half cock and strike the flint edge squarely with a small hammer or brass punch.

why brass rather than other metal/alloy ?

No sparks,.... if you have to knap the flint on a loaded flinter.

If interested in flint knapping worth a look at your tube [Brandon Flint Knappers 1940}

Sharpening (knapping) dull flints is actually easy and takes little time to learn. It can double or sometimes triple the life of a flint. I use a copper hammer and knap mine in the cock. Just be sure you're holding a finger under the flint edge and have the cock pulled back from the cock notch otherwise you can damage the notch or sear.

I totally agree Rob!.....I got in my old "flint bucket" to see what I could try to salvage and even attempted to knap a couple in my hand...after a few scratches/cuts I got a set of Vice Grips and after a little careful adjustment...life was much better.
There was a time when I was really anal about keeping up with the number of shots I could get from each flint, by making a note of the number of ball shot that day, etc, etc,...well, long story short, flint life is all about the knapping, nothing else.
And as Hanshi so aptly mention, the learning curve is a short curve, but one that is very necessary for us flintlock shooters.

in the same or similar vein, i wish i could knap gun flints.
actually, i wish i had the smarts to make a good gun flint node that will just about self knap itself with blade cores. i've got about 40# of georgetown chert and man have i tried. no question i need a one-on-one mentor, and get taught the right way - and in person!

I found me a great knapping "hammer" in the scrap box at work. Not PC, HC or even purty but boy howdy is it the perfect fit to the edge of my flints. Held by the copper tube, perpendicular to the lock plate in just a few light pecks the edge looks like a razor! The flats on the brass hex nut are just under an inch in length.
-
and to boot, it looks kinda cool, too!
-
It is a temperature probe well that goes in boilers & such. It protects the actual sensor. Makes a heck of a good tool!
-
Being pretty much a caplock shooter. I need to learn to be good at knapping. I've switched to flintlocks and I plan to stay with it for the rest of my shooting days.
-
the reknapping of a gun flint is too easy, more than a few good methods ... but knapping out a new gun flint is a totally 'nother story!
-
I know. I wouldn't even try that. I'll just buy them knapped and do my best to keep them sharp.
-
for sharpening a flint, i just put the cock on half, put a finger under the edge of the flint and tap it with a small metal hammer (i keep a small knapping hammer on my shooting bag). with a few taps the edge will once again become razor sharp. do this whilst the gun is unloaded and no loose powder is in sparking range.
-
I bought this. It has a brass hammer i'll use for knapping.

OMG!!! $42 for THAT??? yeesh.
-
I only have to buy it once.
-
truthfully, you didn't need to buy anything.
for knapping, most anything will do, even just a large bolt/screw. in fact, you don't need any thing - pull the cock to full, close the frizzen, release the trigger whilst holding the cock and allow it to scrape the frizzen (this is most likely how it was done, circa 18th century).
any piece of wire will do well for picking the vent (i use a piece of guitar string), a cut off small paint trim brush or toothbrush for cleaning (i prefer a ripped off piece of flannel shirt cloth).
that's it.

I was wondering why the finger under the edge move?

braces the fragile flint edge to keep from bopping off large flakes, only want to remove small flakes.
-
Rob..........2nd post in this thread you said to use a small brass hammer. Now you're saying to use a steel bolt?
-
just use something hard, doesn't matter what - i just happened to have gotten this li'l chrome plated brass hammer from the father-in-law (dentist).
if the something you use can spark the flint, that's why i put in the caveat about steering clear of loose powder whilst whacking the stone.
speaking of which, a small, kinda egg shaped stone works very well, too, as a "hammer stone" for knapping the gun flint!
as is 'pressure flaking', where you use something pointed and hard (deer antler tine) to push into the flint edge to flake it.
lotsa good ways to knap a flint edge.
-
The hammer I bought has the round edge and sharp edge. So, i'm covered and it's brass so no sparks.
I like to keep things simple.

I had watched that video. I watched all the knapping videos I could find. This one seemed the easiest and the reason I bought the hammer.

to each their own, i wouldn't just bang on a gun flint edge without giving it support.
-
I didn't say I was going to. I was just explaining why I bought the hammer. I assume if they make them that guys must be buying them. I can also just use the edge of the hammer or the rounded part to knap. I'll come up with a system that takes off the smallest amount possible, but sharpens it.
It's not like i'm not listening to you what you recommend. You did say to use a small brass hammer.

i didn't mean you, i meant the guy in the video who's whacking the gun flint edge *hard*.
folks buy lotsa stuff they don't need, it's the american way ... or rather the 20th-21st century way. people didn't want/need all that krap in the 'olden dayze' of 1950 and back.

That video Muley posted is the same one you linked to, Rob. I too am trying to learn how to knap, as I have a box full of dull flints. How hard should you tap the flint?
-
The two videos should be different. ?
-
I meant the very first video, of the dude from Utah.
-
Oh ok. I didn't watch the first one. My bad.
Don't you hate it when someone posts a video that's already been posted?
-
It's all good. I'm just seeking information.

I see you're in the AMM. I always wanted to join them. I've gotten too old now. You do some pretty hard core trekking i'm not sure I could do now. I'll be 74 next month.

Actually, I haven't been an active member for some time and now I just do my own thing.

IMHO, that is just about as "Buckskinner" as a feller can get...find something useful, use it!

Good post, it made me get off my butt last night and get out into my workshop and make a proper knapping hamer - other then the one I had been using that was made from an Allen Wrench... This one is made from 1/4" copper with a 12 penny nail set firmly into it as the handle. You can see I've wasted no time getting leather on the handle that I'll trim down in a little while.

Ok Joe. You do the melody and i'll do the words. The song title will be.

I like it!

Okay, wasn't all that happy with the first knapping hammer I did late last night, so I did another. It looks better to me, but I'll also use the one I made last night. The new one is the top one.

Both look good to me.

Nice work - The phrase "functionally elegant" comes to mind.

Thank you JStanley. Check your PM's shortly.

I made a knapping hammer by cutting the blade off a screwdriver, re-grinding it to fit the cock screw and inserting the other end into a piece of copper bar. I used JB Weld and also pinned it in. Works like a charm.
-
I bought a dozen Tom Fuller flints for $19.95 from TOW. That's $1.66 ea. Pretty good price.

Thank you JStanley. Check your PM's shortly.
Just wanted to publicly thank Ohio Joe for sending me one of his custom crafted knapping hammers. Y'all are a great bunch of guys!

Same here, I really enjoyed the AMM when I lived in Wyoming,.... since we moved out here on the plains I've let my membership lapse.

Those are down-right cool tools. :)

Joe, I don't see any fleas on that dog.
A piece of brass with a short handle is all you ever need for a quick "tune-up" on a contrary flint.
I believe that dog will hunt!

The attached is a scan of a printout I made on this subject from the old MLML site, which is no longer in existence, unfortunately. The picture is not very clear, but the description should be usable. It's a tool to use to knap the edge of the flint. Mine is made from a nail and I use the handle of my knife to tap it.
