Title: Tallow hole?
Post by: Forager on January 30, 2017, 05:13:11 PM
Thinking of adding one to the Pedersoli.  Any thoughts/experiences with tallow holes?

Thanks!

I don't like them.

I've seen them on poorboy rifles.  It seems to me that they would be collecting dirt in the tallow unless you were real careful with them!

Not a big fan of the use of a tallow hole, but if you're copying a particular rifle that has one - then it's your call. I too wonder about collecting dirt? Perhaps it wouldn't collect much more dirt then lubed patched balls in bullet/ball blocks?

I think it draws the eye to the hole and detracts from the overall appearance of the weapon, my opinion only.  I would not want one on my rifle, that does not mean that a tallow hole isn't the perfect answer for someone else.  I tend to do what I like and to heck with what others may say or think.  Try it, you may just like it, the attitude that is, not the tallow hole. :)

Had a nice, plain percussion rifle, DST, beaver tail cheek piece, wisht I'da kept it
Had a hole in the right side of butt, about where tallow hole would be, but it was for holding one grease patched ball.
Still had white lead corrosion in the hole.
Doan remember how to post attachments. Reckon it is simple, but instructions to do so are sometimes the absolute hardest thing to find on any site. Like this one, sorry
