Here's a couple blocks I made for some family
These are the first ones I've ever done and the first time wire inlaying
The turtle is brass and the feather is silver
I really like the turtle best
I'll probably do more of those and try and get my intersections tighter
-
Very nice. I particularly like the turtle, but all are excellent work.
-
Lookin' good!
-
Those are some nice looking loading blocks for sure!
-
Those are all real nice!
FWIW: I've only seen one other wire inlaid loading block, and that was at a Rondy in Springfield, Oregon, many years back.
Yours are every bit as nice as that one was, mainly because that one was a straight 6 hole rectangle that looked a bit bulky to me.
He received a lot of compliments on the inlay, and I'm quite sure it took some time and talent to put it together, but it was just a little bit much for this old man.

Thanks guys
I have been wanting to practice wire inlay for future projects and thought this would be a nice thing to try on
I'm looking for more loading block ideas if you have any let me know what you would like to see and send me your address and I'll send them to you!!
I'm still trying to learn the staining and sealing for what looks the best

Very nice work lonewolf
, I make blocks but are a bit simpler. So far I have used birdseye maple, walnut and Cherry. So far my .36,45& 50 all have blocks. Your work inspires one to add some artistic flair next time, again, nice work.
-
Thanks I have used maple and hickory and birch
I guess I did t realize how hard hickory was until I started to work it
I had a friend cut me a chunk of walnut so that will be my next block
I think the finished wire inlay will look a little better in that walnut
I have really enjoyed the inlay procedure plus it is pretty cheap and you can just about make everything you need
-
They're all very impressive but I, too, really like the turtle. I'd do well to get the holes in a line and the sides straight; forget inlays!
-
How 'bout arrowhead (old flint style), buffalo head, or snake (my fav, just sayin). Great work on those in pic by the way
-
Thanks
I'll start drawing those up!
-
I broke down and bought the right size bit (35/64) to make .54 cal loading blocks and have been making them out of any scrap I have left over from other projects. Any of my friends who shoot a 54 have been inundated with loading blocks.
This one is from some walnut crotch wood scrap after I cut out a stock blank. We carry the 4 ball blocks in our hunting pouch as second shots are rare but I have used all 4 one time.

Here's the next ones in the works
Arrowhead is brass and the arrow is German silver
I still like the looks of brass
They are on maple but I haven't stained or finished them yet
I will hopefully have sometime this weekend and will finish them and post the pics
-
Looking good! How thick are the blocks?
-
They are pretty thick
3/4" I bought a couple awesome grained maple boards at a local lumber yard and I don't have my band saw up and running yet so I have just been using them that thick
How think do you guys make yours
-
Beautiful work!
-
SjFriend
Get me a picture of a snake
Or I'll send you this Arrowhead if you like it
It's drilled for 50 cal though
PM me your address
-
I have used half-inch thick curly maple.
-
I bet it's better in your hand 1/2 over 3/4
-
Lighter, definitely, and a little easier to get the patched balls in and out. Counter sinking the holes a bit helps too.

I make mine about 3/8 to 7/16 inches thick. They are nowhere near as fancy as you guys make. Nice work! :hairy

I haven't seen Lonewolf on the forum in quite a while, hope everything is okay with that ol' boy.
If Rondo or anyone is in touch with him, give him a gentle nudge and send him over to see us.
I know he's had a lot going on, just hope everything is okay.

I haven't seen, or heard, anythin' from Lonewolf in quite a while. :(

Thanks Winter Hawk! :bl th up
:Doh! Silly old me! I could have looked in his profile to see his last visit.
Still yet, many times there are ever binding friendships made here in the brotherhood, and one Member will know a bit more about a person than anyone else...this time I was thinking that person just may have been Rondo.
And then, at times, problems pop-up that the so-called "missing" person just doesn't want to discuss in public, if ya get my drift.
Our Membership Roster looks more like the Geriatric Roster at the local Hospital...us old coons are rather fond of our stinkin ol' smoke poles, and we seem to appreciate all the others who do the same, be they young or old.
In fact, Winter Hawk, iff'n it ever comes to you wondering why I've not been around for awhile, I would appreciate it very much if you would "Yell-Out" and check on me...and I promise to do the same for you.
As the younger generation might say; "That's how we roll 'round here".

Right! It's been almost two months since he was here, maybe time for someone to PM or email him to make sure he's okay. Of course that still may not work; I lost contact with a friend of many years, have no idea what happened and his email account doesn't seem to be active. Last I heard from him he had become a truck driver and going long haul so he could build up a retirement fund. I sure do miss that guy - gave him a Lyman GPR is how much I thought of him!

Hey guys
Thanks for thinking of me
We took on a couple more foster kids and things were overwhelming on the farm
Hate to say it but I didn't even shoot a gun this year
So I'll have to make up for it next year!!

.
Nice work on those fancy loading blocks, folks ! :toast . :bow
I guess I'm more Catholic in my tastes & endeavors......... the only thing I did, besides boring the holes for several PRB's, was to counter-bore the flip side to fit the muzzle of the rifle I made it for.

I like that PetahW!
Like OHIO Joe said, "That under-rib notch is a real nice touch.

That looks a whole lot nicer than what I've been able to whittle out! :bow I had thought of doing the counter bore thing, may have to try that myself on the next one I make. :toast
