Title: flints for sale
Post by: greyhunter on October 23, 2017, 07:16:13 PM
Have seen remarks about one gentleman selling good flints on here many times, never wrote down his name or address. Anyone have info on him? Also need frizzen for a Cabelas St Louis Hawken if they are available. Muchos gracias!

You might be talking about Rich Pierce. He used to sell Missouri flints which were white in color. Unfortunately he stopped selling them.

I believe the Cabela's is made by Investarms, who also makes the rifles for Lyman.  Here is the frizzen from Lyman direct: https://www.lymanproducts.com/flintlock-lock-replacement-parts.html/

Otherwise you might try what Brownell's has; Also try Dixon's at http://www.dixonmuzzleloading.com/  You might also call Deer Creek and see if their frizzens will fit.

Let us know what you find!

Back in the day when I was selling stuff, I purchased frizzens from both Lyman and from Thompson Center direct, as a distributor.
I would imagine the parts would still be available.
Going back some years before that, I bought parts from Log Cabin Sport Shop in Lodi, OH.
Or, if you cannot find anything from all the usual suspects, try contacting Lyman directly.  If they will not sell direct, ask them for the names of their warranty repair centers.  Surely, one of them would have retail parts to sell.

Fuller flints are brought in by a lot of companies.  Track, Dixie Gun Works and The Gun Works are just a couple of names that come to mind.  Sorry, I cannot recollect who is bringing the French amber flints in, but i hear they are pretty good, possibly better than the English ones.  Hope that helps.

I've never seen a reason to use anything other than Fuller's English flints. YMMV.  :bl th up

Rich Pierce flints were the best I have used so far, they seemed to last forever and really throw a spark, wish he still made them.

greyhunter....I got some Rich Pierce Flints headed your way.

Wish I had more of those but I am willing to share with you what I do have, and I'll throw a couple of Tom Fuller Old English in the batch, so you can make the comparison yourself.

We hear, and read, a lot of "stuff' on the Internet, but absolutely nothing beats the old tried & true method of doing the judging for yourself.

BTW: I have learned very recently that you can order Flints with a "flat-top" if that's something you might prefer...all ya gotta do is made a note on the order that flat-top is whatcha want...neat huh?

This old dog learns new tricks every single day, some of that "new" could be just old stuff I had entirely forgot about, but not this one....

Uncle Russ...

Thanks for the info on the flints and the frizzen sources, forgot about the Lyman / Investment Arms connection. Had a Lyman, will check my box for the spare, unless I give it away..............
