Here is the wood for my Hawken rifle build.
[ Invalid Attachment ]
I have a friend who builds very nice Hawken guns doing the work for me. The barrel is on order from Rice. It will be 54 caliber, one inch at the breech tapering to 7/8 at the muzzle, 32 inches long. The wood is maple and all the furniture will be iron. Inspired by the Kit Carson rifle.

Looking forward to seeing the finished rifle Steve :bl th up

Looks like a great piece of wood for a stock. I look forward to seeing it as well. I like the idea of using a tapered barrel. :hairy

Oh, I am enjoying the fact that I can now afford to have a few nice custom guns.
I am getting completely out of the production, sorta - facsimile, but not quite correct rifles. They served me well when they were the best I could afford but now it's time to move up. I sold the little CVA frontier rifle to a petite little Lady who loves shooting it, have a 50 cal percussion GPR for sale now, upgraded the CVA mountain rifle I gave to my eldest son, and when I get the new Hawken ready to hunt I will give my rebuilt 54 caliber Deer Creek rifle to my youngest son.
That's going to leave me with a 40 caliber Lancaster flint rifle, a 54 caliber Hawken, a 62 caliber flintlock Chief's trade gun, and a Navy Arms 12 gauge double barrel percussion shotgun. I don't know what I couldn't get done with that battery. I guess the boys can decide who gets which after I'm gone. Until then, I'm going to get as much enjoyment outta these as I possibly can.

The barrel has arrived and is having the breach installed now. It's starting to come together.

Please keep us up to date on the rifle's progress, and post pictures whenever you can. :hairy :applaud

It's been a while, but here's a report on the build.
It's coming along slowly. Inspired by the Kit Carson Hawken.
54 caliber Rice barrel. One inch at the breach tapering to 7/8 inch at the muzzle. 31 5/8 inches long. Weight is 8 pounds at this stage.

Starting to get real excited about it!

Unless you're going to age it some, it pretty well looks done. Lookin real sharp to my eye. :bl th up

The metal will be rust blue, the wood still needs a little more finish.
-
looks killer as is and if it was mine i'd leave all the metal alone and allow it to age and relic the "right way" - time and use! :*:

Looks great Steve! I look forward to more pictures and range reports.

Spoke with my builder yesterday. He says the rifle shoots fine and came in just under 8 pounds. I'm going to have it in hand at the rendezvous August 31. :applaud

If it shoots anywhere near as good as it looks it's a sure-fire winner!

I like the idea of that tapered barrel. Over the years I often thought about using one - but never did. It's going to be a very nice rifle for sure! :hairy
