thank you for the well wishes.  Here on the central coast of California it sure isn't going to seem like the 4th.  The 4th of July parade has been cancelled, along with our church group picnic.  Fireworks?  Ain't gonna happen.  Mrs. Smoke's sister and family are not traveling this year, so they won't be here with us for all the festivities.
So, overall, it's going to be a rather quiet time around the house this year.  So, I guess we will celebrate quietly this year.
Happy 4th of July all.

It will be a quiet one here also.  Despite what the nay-sayers would have us believe, this is still the best country in the world (just ask the people trying to get in).  I'm proud to be a citizen here!

:yessir: Happy birthday to the U.S.A! :yessir:

The version of our pledge is a bit more detailed I grew up with...

I pledge allegiance to the flag
Of the United States of America
And to the republic, for which it stands
One nation under God
Indivisible
With liberty and justice for all

The Pledge has an interesting history. A little googling revealed the following.
The original (1892) Pledge:
"I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Congress officially recognized the Pledge for the first time, in the following form, on June 22, 1942:
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

The phrase "under God" was incorporated into the Pledge of Allegiance on June 14, 1954, by a Joint Resolution of Congress amending ยง 4 of the Flag Code enacted in 1942.
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

The salute to the flag also changed. Originally it was like the Nazi salute but with the hand pointing toward the flag. It was changed in WWII to the hand over the heart as we (most of us older folks anyway) are familiar with.
