I know about FG also about C grade, but H G is a new one on me. Tried to copy the link, but it didn't work. Schagticoke Powder Company label calls it HG. It was listing from 94 pages of powder labels from he Hagley Museum.

I found this while doing a search for HG Black Powder... HG might stand for the following? I can't say for sure.
High Grade - Governmental ยป Military

Though not on the list in the link I gave above, after seeing the label I would lean to HG = Hunting Grade...
Perhaps something like 2.5 FG, but this is only a guess. :shake

Here's an old can marked HG on one side, and FFFG on the other. Can is only a quarter lb. Wonder if it was the top of the line?

Just don't know? I hope someone comes along that does, as this is interesting. :shake
It might be "Fire Works" powder? I only say this because of the "H" following the fireworks "Designation Number" - and fireworks have been around since gun powder. It's almost like a dust in a firecracker.

HG = Mercury fulminate

I asked around on another site. Seems HG refers to high gloss, and was registered as a trade mark by Dupont. Don't know if that means they were affiliated with Schaghticoke Powder Co. Or if Dupont got to the registration office first.

Not sure if the registration office would have anything to do with it, as I expect (just like today) - all black powder cans have to be clearly marked as to what they are selling inside that container.
The person who could probably answer your question (if he's still kicking) is; The Mad Monk... He hung out over at MLF, and IIRC over at ALR, so if he's still above ground, he could probably answer your question. :shake
