Title: Flint & Caplock & Matchlock Firing Test / Research Video
Post by: Ohio Joe on June 06, 2022, 07:53:40 PM
Here is an interesting video some may be interested in.

When you get a little past the halfway point - they are timing flint, cap, and matchlock ignition time. I was actually surprised with the Match Lock ignition time... Anyway, thought some may like to see this.

Thanks Joe!  I don't know where they came up with 25% failure rate for flintlock ignition, though.  If mine were that bad I would certainly go to caplock!  Neat video.

Kees, I just have a feeling that this is an "offshore" video, and as such "IMHO" I simply feel (and I don't care how far back one goes in history & with todays Replica's) that those folks across the pond "to this day" - still can not properly harden a frizzen the way good ol' American Gunsmith, could and do... And of course there are some original muzzle loading firearms in that group,,, well, it shows up...

Also, did you notice the blow-back of the percussion hammer of the one rifle? Needs a new Nipple...  :shake

Americans in general had/have more experience with flint than our brothers across the pond.  If this is a trend or not I haven't the foggiest idea.  IMO the locks built over here are quite a step above the European built ones.  Obviously that might not have been true during the colonial period since we used imported locks.
