Title: The TMA 2024 Postal Match and the 2024 Postal Fun Shoot
Post by: Nessmuk on March 04, 2024, 12:32:02 PM
The TMA 2024 Postal Match and the 2024 Postal Fun Shoot

    The TMA 2024 Postal Match and the 2024 Postal Fun Shoot will start on April 1st and end on the last day of October 2024.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NOTE:  A shooter class system is enacted for the 2024 TMA Monthly Postal Matches and shooter scores from 2021 , 2022 and 2023 will be used to classify competitors next year.
Master/50, Expert/45, Sharpshooter/40, Marksman/35, Patriot/30, Defender/29 and under.  Returning competitors will be assigned a class based on the average of their prior year’s scores,
 new competitors won’t be assigned a class until they have submitted two targets for score.
If there is one (or more) shooters within a class, a top score winner will be named.
The shooter class system will hopefully be an impetus for folks to join the TMA Postal Match competition and have it be a vehicle to help strive for better marksmanship.
 With a scoring classification system, as you improve you will have an opportunity to jump up in class and thus receive a good measure of shooting achievement.
Without a class scoring system, some folks - like me! - who will never become a Master at least have an opportunity to jump class from Defender to Patriot.
       ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

ANYONE can enter the monthly contests, there are no match fees.  If you are not already registered on the TMA forum, it's also free, just sign up!  Submit a completed target face type for just one month, or a group of selective months, or all seven months - totally your call !

Trad muzzleloaders only, .31 to .75 in bore, iron sights, lead round balls only.  Long gun or pistol (either rifled or smoothbore), any traditional ignition system
(flintlock., percussion, match lock, wheel lock) are all welcome.

You can use multiple trad muzzleloaders - it doesn't matter if one month you shoot a rifled long gun and another month you shoot a smoothbore pistol.
All that matters is that a firearm that meets the rules standards (shown above) is employed.  Lots of choices!

There are no special equipment "classes", run what ya brung as long as it fits the general rules, we all compete as one happy trad muzzleloader fun lovin' group.

QUICK SYNOPSIS OF THE 2024 POSTAL MATCH / POSTAL FUN SHOOT

1.  Make a post in this thread that you will be shooting in the TMA Postal Match and/or Postal Fun Shoot.
2. This year in addition to our Postal Match we have included a Postal Fun Shoot to include a Rendezvous type target choice in addition to our Traditional Target.
This is for folks who are bored with bullseye targets and would like a different challenge. To keep the “Rondy” challenge fresh, I will only post the Rondy target one week before the first of the month.

3.  Print your target, mount your target with cardboard backing (this will allow the cleanest bullet holes).
If you don’t have access to a printer or lack the computer skills to download to a flashdrive, PM me with your address.
I will mail you a target with the understanding that you will mail it back to me with 5 bullet holes in it.

Print out the TMA Rendezvous target face for match shooting
 These targets will be available 1 week before the start of the month.

3.  Pick one or more months to shoot.

4.  Shoot for score!

---> All targets are to be shot at a measured 25 yards, five shots per target.

---> Bullet holes must completely break a scoring line to count for the higher value.

---> Target faces and scores will get posted when recieved. Note: If there are mailed targets on the way, I will mark the standings as provisional until the mailed targets arrive.

---> Each competitor can submit one target face for score for the  monthly postal match and one for the the Postal Fun Shoot, one Traditional and one Rondy.

5.  Each month, submit your best scored target face by emailing an image of it to score@TradMLA.org. or nessmuk@cox.net or snail mail the target to :
Mark Van der Veer
 2790 Greystone Lane
 Choctaw, OK, 73020.
If you mail your targets, please PM me(Nessmuk)  so I’ll look for it in the mail.

Targets must be filled out with name, date, rifle or smoothbore, flint or percussion, caliber, SHOOTING POSITION and the total score.
All scored targets must be email or mailed dated no later than the last day of the month the face was scored.

6.  That's it!

For more match details, see below!

SHOOTING POSITION FOR POSTAL MATCH

Shooters may shoot off-hand OR from a bench using ELBOWS ONLY, NO Rest of any kind.

SHOOTING POSITION FOR POSTAL FUN SHOOT

Shooters may use any position they wish, off-hand, sitting, kneeling. squatting, sitting or standing.
IF A REST IS USED IT MUST BE NON-ADJUSTABLE TYPE THAT WOULD BE COMMON IN THE 1850’s OR EARLIER. (Home-made would be best!)

TARGET FACES ...

You must download and print out the special TMA target face.

You can shoot the TMA target face type multiple times, but submit only ONE face type per month for score - your call.

NOTE:  You must have shot the target face you are submitting within the month of submission.  If you shot a target face in April, it can only be submitted in April.

You do not have to submit any target face for score every month.  You can shoot just one month of the match and submit just one target face for score.

All up to what you wish to do.  This is a very flexible postal match that allows you to compete just one month, or multiple months, or all seven months.

There will be monthly winners and an overall year winner for each face type, too.

The more months you submit a target face, the higher your year's aggregate score will be.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

---> As usual, all targets are to be shot at a measured 25 yards, five shots per target.

---> Bullet holes must completely break a scoring line to count for the higher value.

All target faces Must be secured to a cardboard backing - stapled, taped, glued, whatever - target faces must be held Tight to the backing as this will insure clean holes that all can see.
There WILL be forthcoming holes in your target faces, right???

Submit your best scored target face by emailing an image of it to:
 score@TradMLA.org. or snail mail the target to :
Mark Van der Veer
 2790 Greystone Lane
 Choctaw, OK, 73020.
If you mail your targets, please PM me so I’ll look for it in the mail.

Targets must be filled out with name, date, rifle or smoothbore, flint or percussion, caliber, shooting position and the total score.
 All scored targets must be email dated no later than the last day of the month the face was scored.

Down below please find links to the TMA bullseye we'll be using.  Just print the target faces out.  Don't have a printer?
Copy the two target face files to a thumb drive and bring it either to a friend (with a printer!) or a library or Staples, and have a few copies printed.
If you don’t have access to a printer or lack the computer skills to download to a thumb drive, PM me with your address.
I will mail you a target with the understanding that you will mail it back to me with 5 bullet holes in it.

Real quick, for clarification: iron sights only, either open or peep?  Or only open?

After much painstaking research. I have determined Peep sights are allowed as long as you haven't slipped some magnification in.   :luff:

 What about rear sights on a smoothbore.

I am happy to report that Quality Control here at the No Powder facility,  has reported that all balls cast yesterday,  have met the necessary criteria to be considered 10x's, and are awaiting deliver to the postal targets. They added they have no control over the firearm or shooter, so therefore, anything can happen.What this simply means, I think I'll participate for at least a couple of months. Thanks again Nessmuk, and have fun guys.

Announcement!!

Due to a computer/Email problem start of the Postal has been delayed.

My Email provider decided to sell-off/Pawn-off his Email service to another provider on 1 april, needless to say it hasn't worked so far.

I should have everything back up by COB today,

when it rains, it pours!!

Apologies to all!

Libby?  I've always wanted to go there when i worked for the USFS.  My engineer from Pinedale, Wyoming ended up retired there; passed away before Covid-19 hit.  Evan Griffith.  Don't know if his wife, Caron is stil there or not.  My Christmas cards were returned as undeliverable, so I assume she left.

Kevin

Never did make it to the Libby RDV.  Oh well...
I got to the Eureka event several times.  The first one I won the shooting event.  A few years later I returned and somehow won the best beard contest.  I bought a Douglas 1 x .54 barrel and had it installed on my Renegade.  That was really a shooter after that.  Like a damn fool, I sold that rifle.   :Doh! :Doh! :Doh!  There used to be a bunch of Canadian guys that would come down for the fun and merriment.  I really liked them.  At the time I had a bunch of BP revolvers and I would outfit myself like Josie Wales, probably had half a dozen pistols in holsters and stuffed into my belt.  We used to have shootouts and I was pretty formidable with all those guns.  One of the Canadians had a "hanging" harness and he always got lynched.  He had the kick and quiver routine down pretty good.
Go to Eureka, Kevin.  Go!!!

Friends, I apologize for my absence. I've been travelling to my cabin in the Adirondack mountains. it took 3 days by car from Oklahoma, I only drive 8 hours a day, daylight only. I've found the internet service up here in the mountains has gone from poor to sketchy.

Salty asked if shooters could post their targets rather than email them, PLEASE POST YOUR OWN Targets!!!!!!

WHAT HAS HAPPENED!!!!  Was going to start a new thread, but it has to do with postal shoots. Go to page 6 on the postal shoot thread . That was before I knew about this high tech crap. Look at the fun these guys were having chewing the fat about their shooting. Whether it was good ,bad, or otherwise. I really liked the one from Two Steps wearing floaties and fins while shooting  (June comments about our June 2017 sillywet targets). Great stuff. If history repeats itself, as far as the postal shoots, when is it gonna happen? Sorry for ramping and raving. I'm through now.

Well in true fashion for me I imagine these won't count, but here they are anyways..
 I had big plans for us to go shoot after I got off work, then it rained all day so I didn't print targets at work. Then I got home and it let up, so we loaded up some guns.. I ran downstairs to print targets, and the printer wouldn't work. I remember seeing some tma targets in the stuff I had bought of Marty's, so I dig around really quick and found these.. They aren't this years, but we headed out anyways.
The kids ran steel with 22s for a while then momma and I busted out the muzzleloader.
Lo and behold here comes ole reliable Nebraska wind.
My cold bore shot was the the revolutionary challenge and I was quite a ways high... Then her and I each shot our 5 shots for the targets..
I was pretty pleased with how it went.. I had her load her own shots so she'll be in better practice for club meets as well.
Anyhow, here's our targets. Count or not, up to yall. I may have to wait until July to try again. This month is a lot of baseball and swim meets ahead of us.
Joe

I agree with Kevin. But just for your info, I tried figuring out what your score would be on the B8 target. I believe it would be either a 48-4x, or a 49-4x. Either one, nothing to complain about.

Either sounds good to me! I'll get some proper targets printed at work next chance I get. Then I'll be ready to roll next month..

Joe, I think either you need to get your yardstick calibrated, or else I'll get mine calibrated. On that picture of you shooting, those targets to be far, far away compared to mine at 25 yds. What's wrong with this picture?

I think it's the perspective from her camera on her phone... It's a honest 25 with my rangefinder!

Way to go buddy. If you was using that rifle you were talking about selling, you might want to reconsider. Glad to see you got to shoot instead of serving as RSO. It's nice that you to do that, but you need to shoot some too. :hairy

I went out yesterday with the Hodgepodge rifle.  First to the 100 yard range for the cold bore, one shot challenge where I was great for windage, but a foot high.  :o  I moved over to the 25 yard range, got everything set up and loaded the rifle.  Then I got a text from the wife and, of course, had to answer it.  Once that was done I picked up the rifle and took my first shot.  Couldn't see where I hit so went to grab the ramrod to wipe the bore, but where IS the RR???  No where on the bench, not in the thimbles, maybe down range?  Yep, there it was, at least one 24" piece of it.  :Doh! My oh my, what happens when you get distracted!

So I wrapped it up and went home as I didn't have a spare.  I have chores to do today, maybe I can get out tomorrow and try again....

I finally got out to shoot.  Totally missed the 100 yard target on the challenge.  Shot the monthly target and the rondy target.  Not a stellar performance but I haven't shot in quite a while.  Now I can't get the pictures to load.  Tried several versions and I get invalid attachment message.  Not sure what I am doing wrong.  Have fiddled with this for an hour or so.
Well they posted even though I got the invalid message.  I was shooting a 58 caliber flint rifle yesterday 6/25.  Forgot to write it on the targets.  Looks like I got a 10 on the hornets and a 38 for the B8.

Hey Kees, I'm not laughing at you. I'm laughing with you, because that piece of broken ramrod sure looks familiar. And then there was the time I pulled the rod out of the ground in one piece. I guess that's where a range rod comes in handy. Well enough about that. And Dave, good on ya. For someone who hasn't shot for a while, I think you're back in the saddle already.

Have at it buddy. Glad you had fun , and hope you have a chance to do it again. By the way, did you check that one shot several times? Boy that's real close to being a 10. I know, it's for fun, but don't short change yourself.

@No Powder

I did look at it over and over. Being the person I am I chose the lesser score.  It did break the line ever so slightly, but IMHO not enough to take advantage of it.  It is for fun and I did better this month than last, so all is good.

I don't think I could have hit the paper without my glasses. So without glasses, looks good to me. Did you forget the bee target, or were they too hard to see without specs?

Here is a question.  I am leaving for my cabin in Vermont Sunday morning early.  I'd like to do the July shoot while up there.  I assume the B-8 target for the regular monthly shoot so I have that, and I have my revolutionary challenge target but any chance you have the Rondy target picked for July out so I can print it tomorrow and take that with me as well?  Don't sweat it if you can't.  Thanks. :hairy :bigsmile:

Well Tom, my problem (among many, but that's another story) is that my eyes are just good enough to pass the BMV eye test but not that great otherwise.  I need low-power readers for books and such and long distance isn't great either.  I usually do fine w/o glasses unless I'm trying to focus on putting my front sight on a black circle at 25 yards or a scaled down shingle at 100!

I had to leave for home by 1030, and it was 1020 by the time I had shot the Morgan Challenge and the monthly target (I'm slow!) so I didn't get to the hornets.

Speaking of hornets, back in my Navy days (1962-65) we often operated with the USS Hornet (CV-12).  In around 1987 or 8 I was going to the  Bremerton, Washington Navy base to pick up some uniforms.  I was surprised when I came around a curve in the road and it ran right in front of her, mothballed with a ton of other ships.  It did my heart good to see her again!

I knew you had a good reason, or you would have shot it. And you're no slower than I am. When I go to the range, I try to be shooting by 10:00 AM. Until I shoot the long range, the B8, and the rondy, it's usually about 1:00 PM. Then it's time to start cleaning. ;banghead;
I bet you were surprised. I believe I would have been too.

It takes me a good 2 1/2 to 3 hrs to shoot too.
 What's the rush I figure .  Swab after shots, have a drink of soda etc.
 Usually someone there comes over to see the flinter..
  Then they go back and rip off a hundred rounds and go home.

Makes you wonder if their interest in the flintlock is fake. I know there are a few others shooting smokepoles where I shoot. I find patches that aren't mine. But there is never anyone there shooting one when I go. People talk about owning , hunting, and shooting them, but where are they? I don't get it. I'm thinking maybe I don't want to see what their guns look like anyway. Might make me cry.

2 more days to shoot post, friends.

July's "Fun" target will be the Dreaded Mike Fink, kinda traditional for July.

 I'm getting a lot of rain up here in the Adirondack mountains, been rained out on 4 shooting attempts. I managed to shoot both targets on Tuesday but got soaked to the skin on the walk back to camp. I ironed the targets dry and have them weighted between glass for now. I'll post them later today.
